Sportsbook Adjusts NFL Week 1 Odds

How much is Tom Brady worth to the New England Patriots on a game-by-game basis? The updated Week 1 NFL betting lines at the online sportsbooks suggest that he is worth almost a touchdown to the team.

At BetOnline the Patriots opened as 6-point home favorites for their season-opening game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday, September 10. However, since Brady was handed a four-game suspension that line at BetOnline has dropped to a pick'em.

For his part in Deflategate Brady was given a four-game ban by the league which would see him sitting out against the Steelers in Week 1 and then miss subsequent games against the Bills (Week 2), Jaguars (Week 3), and Cowboys (Week 5). New England has a Week 4 bye.

Brady is expected to appeal the suspension in hopes of having it reduced, although the appeal failing to reduce the punishment is currently the favored option on the betting props at the online sportsbooks.

While Brady is out Jimmy Garoppolo is expected to be the Patriots' starting quarterback; Garoppolo has appeared in six career games, completing 19 of his 27 pass attempts for 182 yards with one touchdown and zero INTs - for a QB Rating of 101.2.

The defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots have opened as 6-point home favorites against the Pittsburgh Steelers at BetOnline for the 2015 NFL season opener on Thursday, Sept. 10.

The Patriots have won eight of the past 11 meetings with Pittsburgh both straight-up and against the spread, and they will get the opportunity to face the Steelers sans arguably their best player – running back Le’Veon Bell.

Pittsburgh won the AFC North a year ago but lost to the Baltimore Ravens 30-17 at home in the Wild Card round of the playoffs. Bell (1,361 yards rushing and 854 receiving last year) missed that game with a knee injury, and he will be out three more to start the regular season as punishment for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

Former teammate LeGarrette Blount, another running back who split time with Bell in the backfield for the Steelers in 2014 before getting released and signing with New England, will miss the season opener for the Patriots due to the same reason.

New England knocked out Baltimore 35-31 in the Divisional Round the following week en route to winning the AFC championship along with its fourth Super Bowl title against the NFC champion Seattle Seahawks. The Ravens also kick off the 2015 season with a marquee matchup as they visit the Denver Broncos as 4-point road underdogs at BetOnline.

The Seahawks will begin defense of their second consecutive conference title by visiting the St. Louis Rams as 4.5-point road favorites in an NFC West game. Other key divisional matchups in Week 1 include the Green Bay Packers visiting the Chicago Bears as 3.5-point road chalk in the NFC North and the Dallas Cowboys hosting the New York Giants as 5-point home favorites in the NFC East on Sunday Night Football.

A pair of NFC teams coming off disappointing campaigns and with new head coaches will close out the first week by trying to get off to good starts at home in the two Monday Night Football matchups. Dan Quinn and the Atlanta Falcons will host the Philadelphia Eagles as 1-point underdogs at BetOnline in the early game, followed by Jim Tomsula and the San Francisco 49ers facing the Minnesota Vikings as 4.5-point home favorites.
