Week 3 NFL Odds Preview

OK, so the Chiefs and Bucs are 2-0 and the Cowboys and Vikings are 0-2 - small wonder that fans who like to bet favorites haven't had a great start to the NFL betting season.

The first two weeks has seen one surprise after another. It’s rapidly becoming apparent that a couple of 2009 basement-dwelling teams have made the right changes in the offseason and are vastly improved. The window of opportunity for for taking advantage of NFL odds on these teams will close quickly as oddsmakers adjust the numbers to reflect the improvements.

However, sometimes the wagering public is slower to react, meaning you can still get great odds on undervalued teams and also get generous lines on over-valued teams.

The surprise teams after two weeks into the season would be Chicago, Tampa Bay, Kansas City, Miami, Houston, and to a lesser degree Washington. All these teams have come out on fire and look like they are going to take a run at their respected division titles. Figuring out which of these teams are for real from that group could provide a real edge over the next couple of weeks. The teams that have disappointed after two weeks are Dallas, Minnesota, and to a lesser extent New England and Indy.

There’s no reason for any of these teams to panic at this stage of the season, but if any of them are in decline a similar edge may be out there over the next couple of games. Bookmakers at Bovada have already adjusted for Dallas, making Houston the 3-point favorite this week, and Miami is getting some new-found respect as a 1-point-favorite over the Jets. If there’s one team that might be ripe to bet against right now it’s the Vikings. They have to cover 10.5 points at Bovada against an improving Detroit team that racked up 32 points against the Eagles last week. The Eagles' 3-point spread over Jacksonville would be a good bet, but that number is likely to change now that Kevin Kolb has been announced as the Week 3 starter. One more would be the improved Redskins, who look like a lock to cover 3.5 points against the lowly Rams. However, the Rams have been unlucky and could be 2-0 themselves. This could be a great spot to fade Washington as well.
