Will Peyton Manning replace Jon Gruden on Monday Night Football?

In what was the worst-kept secret in the NFL, Jon Gruden left the booth at ESPN’s Monday Night Football to take the head coaching job for the Oakland Raiders. Gruden is back in the silver and black for his second stint as coach of the Raiders and now his former job is up for grabs.

His nine years in the booth felt uneventful as Gruden tended to praise players rather than critique them and pundits were starting to become disenchanted with Chucky’s efforts. However, viewers will be excited to hear some fresh blood in front of the camera and online sportsbook Bovada is offering odds on who will take the mantle of color commentator on Monday Night Football.

The leader of the pack as of today is the NFL’s former golden goose, Peyton Manning, with odds at EVEN. The five-time MVP and all-time leader in passing touchdowns has shown his immense talent can translate to a gig in front of the camera as evidenced by his ESPYs and SNL hosting stints along with the oversaturation of ads we’ve all be subjected to. While I think he’d be decent at the role, Manning has not mentioned once to the media of being interested in the job, nor has ESPN. If you also consider the boatload of cash he is still getting from endorsements, it seems far-fetched he would ditch that paper to do deep dives on NFL teams for five months of the year.

Other candidates include ESPN analysts Louis Riddick at +550, Steve Young at +600, Randy Moss at +750 and Matt Hasselback at +900, among others.

If my money depended on it, it would be invested in Riddick. The value is great and as far as on-air analysts go, he is the best of the batch. He was the director of pro personnel for Washington and Philadelphia during his career and his insights about the game, along with the emphasis ESPN has been placing on developing new talent, make him the favorite in my eyes.
