Will Alex Smith be with the Kansas City Chiefs next season?

The career of Alex Smith can be viewed as a success or a tragedy depending on your viewpoint. The former No. 1 overall pick has had his highs and lows as a quarterback in the NFL and after the devastating loss to the Titans in the wild-card round, the Chiefs signal-caller could be yelling snap counts in a different uniform for the 2018 season.

Online sportsbook Bovada is offering odds for where the former Utah Ute will suit up next season and there are some juicy options for bettors who are banking on franchises to try to speed up the rebuilding process and make a splash by signing Smith in the offseason.

The current favorite is for him to stay the course and suit back up for the Chiefs at +200 but that option doesn’t seem likely. For starters (no pun intended), he has a $20-million cap hit in 2018 for a squad that is already $7 million above the cap. Secondly, the Chiefs invested a first-round pick on understudy QB Patrick Mahomes II and teams don’t generally give up that kind of draft capital for a player to ride the pine.

Unlike most offseasons where coaching vacancies is the focus, there will be plenty of opportunities elsewhere to quarterback a franchise. Some of the more appealing options for Smith could be a team like the Bills at +500, the Jaguars at +550 and potentially the Redskins at +1200.

Washington would be a very attractive option for both Smith and bettors. Kirk Cousins is expected to depart in free agency and the Skins would be stupid to franchise-tag him again for another season as it would cost them $34.5 million to do so.

A lot of this may also depend on Smith’s motivations. He is 33 years old and in the twilight of his career (unless he starts the TB12 diet, which means he’ll play till he’s 50) and starting over again at the bottom with the Browns or Cardinals may not be appealing for the Pro Bowl quarterback.

But if he’s looking for one final payday, the Browns (+400) or the Jets (+900) could be a tempting option as both are in the top five in cap space available for 2018.
