2017 NHL Entry Draft: Betting Props

After Wednesday’s expansion draft in which the Las Vegas Golden Knights selected their first ever roster, the NHL now officially has 31 teams and they’ll all have the chance to improve their on-ice product during Friday’s entry draft in Chicago.

Online sportsbook Bovada has put up some prop bets for the event and if you’re a hockey nerd who likes to bet on sports, what could be better? If you’ve got an in-depth knowledge of the junior system, there’s an excellent opportunity for you to make some money but for those of you who are not so familiar with those players who are not yet in the show, allow me to guide you through a couple of bets that could pay off on Friday.

Starting at the top, let’s look at the OVER/UNDER for how many trades there will be on the first day of the draft. The total is set at 8.5 with both options on the bet paying -120 and I’m a big fan of the UNDER.

The Golden Knights made a slew of trades prior to the announcement of their roster on Wednesday and they wound up acquiring three additional first-round picks for the 2017 draft. With so many first-round selections changing hands prior to the entry draft, it’s unlikely we see many more trades on Day 1 – especially near the top of the board.

Several other trades have gone down since the expansion draft with the Islanders making the biggest splash by landing former 34-goal-scorer Jordan Eberle in a swap with the Oilers. Edmonton received Ryan Strome and nothing else in the one-for-one that left many confused and bewildered.

The main takeaway, though, is that it seems NHL GMs are eager to get their trades done as soon as possible and I don’t think that can last into Friday.

Let’s move right along to my next lean where I see the total for the number of players from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) going OVER 1.5. Swiss prospect Nico Hischier, who plays for the Halifax Mooseheads of the Q, is expected to go either first or second to the New Jersey Devils or the Philadelphia Flyers, meaning just one more player from the CHL’s most easterly conference will need to be taken in the first round to cash the OVER.

Three players from the Q – Pierre-Olivier Joseph, Antoine Morand and Maxime Comtois – all have a shot to go in the first round with Comtois having the best chance.

Comtois, a right-winger for the Victoriaville Tigres, is the second-ranked player from the Q coming into the draft and several mocks have him getting picked late in the first round, possibly by the Columbus Blue Jackets. The power forward had been ranked as high as fifth in his class but a poor showing at the offensive end in 2016-17 caused his draft stock to slide substantially.

He is, however, the kind of player that Columbus has become known for stockpiling and I’m confident that even if the Jackets pass on him at 24, he’ll go before the end of the first.

Those are my only strong feelings heading into the draft but there’s plenty more betting options and if you happen to find yourself in possession of any valuable insider information, give me a shout @robtrocity on Twitter.
