Ducks Wear the Crown in Matchup With Kings

Two of California’s three teams will meet in LA tonight as the Ducks quack their way into the Staples Center looking to leapfrog their divisional rivals in the Pacific. Both the Ducks and Kings have been extremely underwhelming out of the gates as they both deal with their own adversities – Anaheim is struggling to adapt to a new coach and LA’s goaltending situation is dire.

SHARK BITES
  • The Ducks are 6-2 in their last 8 games against the Kings.
  • The Kings are 3-0 in their last 3 games at home.
  • John Gibson is 4-2 with a .920 save percentage in 6 starts against the Kings.

Neither team scores very often but the Kings, although solid defensively, have a train wreck of a situation between the pipes. Despite giving up the second-fewest shots per game in the NHL, the Kings are way up the list in goals allowed. The Ducks generate almost 30 shots a game and Peter Budaj, the likely starter tonight, has not seen more than 28 shots this year.

The 34-year-old has actually been solid for the Kings but I don’t expect that to last. In any season where Budaj has started 30 or more games, he has posted a save percentage of .905 or worse. The 10-year veteran had been struggling in the minors and could get exposed by the Quackers tonight.

John Gibson is in line for the start tonight and will look to improve what has been a lackluster season for him so far. The young No. 1 has traditionally seen success against the Kings and has been much better against Western Conference opponents this year.
