Canada One Game Away From World Cup Win

With one game in the books, Team Europe will now have to win two straight games to take the World Cup of Hockey – something Thomas Vanek, a forward on Europe, said would be “impossible”.  Team Canada has yet to lose heading into Game 2 of their best-of-three series with Europe and will look to close the World Cup curtains Thursday night at the Air Canada Centre.

SHARK BITES
  • Minus USA’s games, teams that have outshot their opponents are 9-3 at this tournament.
  • Canada is 2-0 against Europe at this tournament, outscoring them 7-2.
  • Carey Price is 4-0 with a .954 save percentage and a 1.50 goals-against average at the World Cup.

Team Canada was admittedly not great in Game 1 of the final and if you listened to post-game interviews without looking at the score first, you would’ve thought they had lost based on how negatively the players talked. They were, however, more than good enough to get the job done and came away with a 3-1 win. Canada outshot Europe 38-33 in the contest and as we’ve seen throughout this tournament, the team that outshoots their opponent usually wins.

The lines have narrowed a little for this game but Team Canada is still a heavy favorite at Bovada where they have been tabbed with a moneyline of -900. Europe had stretches of play against Canada in Game 1 during which they looked capable of taking down the defending Olympic gold medalists. Call me a broken record but, man, +550 is crazy value for a hockey game where a goalie can win or lose a game depending on what kind of day he’s having. Europe has proved they can beat good teams and has played Canada tough in all their matchups so far.

I begged you to take the +110 value on Team Europe’s +2.5 puckline in Game 1 and if you did, it paid you well. Canada is once again a 2.5-goal favorite and I once again believe this game stays closer than oddsmakers do – I’m predicting a 4-2 result in favor of Team Canada.
