Caps, Canadiens on NHL lines

The Washington Capitals are riding an eight-game win streak but to continue that momentum they will have to defy the oddsmakers, who have them as road underdogs in their matchup with the favored Montreal Canadiens in NHL betting action Tuesday night.

Washington (+100 at Bovada) has pulled to within a point of the Eastern Conference leading Philadelphia Flyers and will be fired up against the Canadiens (-120), who they dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to last time out.

The Capitals have received good goaltending from rookie Braden Holtby, who has allowed four goals in four appearances in place of the injured Michal Neuvirth. Alex Ovechkin has returned to form as well, and that bodes well for bettors looking for a possible upset wager for the road underdog Capitals.

Washington did shut out Montreal 3-0 in their first head-to-head meeting this season, but it is the Canadiens who are winners of four of five and closing in on fourth overall in the Eastern Conference. Montreal is 21-16 as a favorite and could be a good wager with their recent play and hostile home crowd. Expect them to be the popular choice as a home favorite on the NHL betting lines.

The last five head-to-head meetings have sent UNDER bettors to the payout window in totals betting.

The Toronto Maple Leafs lost to Tampa Bay on Monday and can’t afford many more losses if they expect to pass the Hurricanes, Rangers, and Sabres and get into the playoffs. They will get a chance to close the gap with Carolina - whom they trailed by two points before the Hurricanes' tilt with Buffalo on Tuesday - when the teams play at the RBC Center on Wednesday.

Toronto will be road underdogs in Carolina, where they lost earlier in the season to the Hurricanes. The Maple Leafs did shut out the Hurricanes 3-0 in February, and with a key win over the Sabres on Saturday they could be poised to pull off the upset. The Hurricanes have lost four straight heading into Tuesday’s game, but are 7-3 in 10 head-to-head matchups with Toronto.

Betting against the Hurricanes has proven to be a costly wager when they are favorites.  Carolina has been very reliable, paying out in 18 of 26 matchups when they have been labelled the favorites.

Three of the last four matchups between these teams have been kind to OVER bettors in totals wagering. The teams have been involved in some highly-offensive matchups of late and totals betting could see a lot of action tilted in favor of the OVER bet for this contest.
