Habs can continue climb in standings with win vs Jackets

Almost a month ago, the Columbus Blue Jackets had this game against Montreal circled on the calendar as an easy win. Fast-forward to today and the Jackets have dropped four of their last five games and will now face off against a surging Canadiens team that has gone 6-2 SU in its last eight games. The Habs have won four of their last six at the Bell Centre and opened as -106 favorites.

SHARK BITES
  • The Blue Jackets are 4-1 SU in their last five games against the Canadiens.
  • The Canadiens are 4-17 ATS in their last 21 games.
  • Canadiens goalie Charlie Lindgren has a 1.24 goals-against average and .964 save percentage in four starts.

The Habs were pretty much rock-bottom three weeks into the season. They were 2-8 SU and the Montreal media was calling for GM Marc Bergevin’s job. So, what changed? Well, the Canadiens defence has improved dramatically, holding teams to 2.7 goals per game in the last 10 and going 7-3 SU. And all of this with goaltender Carey Price only playing two of those 10 games. I don’t think anyone is calling for Charlie Lindgren or Al Montoya to take Price’s job but it’s hard to ignore the Habs’ performance without their all-world netminder. Bettors should seriously consider the Canadiens moneyline in this one and ride the streak.

Columbus, on the other hand, started the season hot going 5-1 SU in their first six games and looking to build on their success from last season. But since November started, the Jackets have dropped four of the last six and are 1-3 SU in their last four on the road. They did break their four-game losing streak by edging the Red Wings on Saturday but bettors may want to look elsewhere when placing their wagers in this matchup.

The total opened at 5.5 and fans shouldn’t expect a shootout in this one. The total has gone UNDER the last two times these teams faced each other and has gone UNDER in four of Montreal’s last five games at home.
