The Temperature Isn't the Only Thing Heating up in Florida

The Oilers dropped the first half of their run through Florida in a 4-1 loss to the Bolts last night and will have to rebound against the red-hot Panthers on the second half of a back-to-back this evening. Although Edmonton has had a ton of success against the Cats of late, the Panthers are 8-1-1 in their last 10 and have gone 6-1 with Jonathan Huberdeau back in the lineup.

SHARK BITES
  • The Panthers are on a 5-game winning streak.
  • The Oilers are 7-0 SU in their last 7 games on the road against the Panthers.
  • Jonathan Huberdeau and Aleksander Barkov have combined for 16 points in their last 7 games.

A big problem for the Oilers tonight – other than trying to slow down the Panthers – is their lack of success on the back end of back-to-backs. They’ve gone 3-7 straight up in that category in their last 10 but have been improving a little, going 2-1 SU in their last three. If Edmonton’s scoring – that’s dropped off since the all-star break – doesn’t pick back up, the Oilers could see the Sharks widen their lead in the Pacific to an insurmountable number.

Tom Rowe’s tactics seem to finally be paying off and the Panthers are back in a playoff spot for the first time in 2017. They’ve been one of the best teams, if not the best team, in the league in the month of February with all but one of their six wins in the shortest month of the year coming on the road.

Much of the Panthers’ new-found success has come from their dominance during five-on-five hockey and their ability to keep the puck out of the net when down a man. They’ve been killing penalties at a 92 percent rate since the break and the Oilers power play has been struggling mightily. Parlay that with the trend that’s seen the total go UNDER in six of the Panthers’ last seven games that closed with a total of 5.5 and you’ve got the recipe for a low-scoring game.
