Outdoor Games Have Historically Had Ample Goals

Today’s half of the Heritage Classic in Winnipeg, featuring the Oilers and Jets will be a stark contrast to that of yesterday’s Alumni game as we go from watching old timers to watching two of the youngest – and most exciting – teams in the league.

SHARK BITES
  • The Total has gone OVER 5.5 in 6 of the last 9 outdoor NHL games.
  • The Total has gone UNDER 5.5 in these teams last 4 games.
  • The Oilers are 5-2 on the puckline in their last 7 games.

Edmonton has opened their 2016-17 campaign 4-1 and things are starting to look hopeful. Don’t be fooled by their record though as they’ve played just one team that made the playoffs last year. A stat that is not in favor of long-term success for this team is their 2.86 goals allowed per game metric. That number is up for the majority of the teams in the league but the Oilers actually had the worst goals against per game last season with 2.56 so they are trending in the wrong direction.

Cam Talbot is the confirmed starter for the Oilers for the first outdoor game of the year as he looks for his third straight solid performance. Talbot was 2-0 with a .973 save percentage against the Jets last season. Paul Maurice has not tipped his hand at who will fill the Jets’ net but we will more than likely see another appearance from young Connor Hellebuyck as he looks to allow fewer than three goals for the first time this season.

The most exciting battle coming into this game will be that between the 2015 No. 1 overall draft pick Connor McDavid and the 2016 No. 2 overall draft pick Patrick Laine. The Finnish sniper is coming off a three-goal performance against the team that passed him up in the last year's draft and Oilers newest Captain already has eight points through just five games.

I don’t normally buy into the whole outdoor shtick but this matchup is a juicy one. Combine the massive amount of goal scoring talent on the ice with the lack of defense that’s going to be played and goals could tumble from this one – set your DVRs accordingly.
