Isles Cruising Since Coaching Change

Not one of the most quintessential matchups of the 2016-17 NHL season but it still has plenty of betting appeal with the Islanders pegged as the road underdogs against the Red Wings tonight. Although they’re a little distracted by the search for a new home rink, they’ve won five of six games since the firing of Jack Capuano and will face a team that’s been terrible on home ice.

SHARK BITES
  • The Red Wings are 0-4 SU in their last 4 games as favorite.
  • The Islanders are 7-2 SU in their last 9 games as an underdog.
  • The Islanders are 5-2 SU in their last 7 games on the road against the Red Wings.

I’m not saying it was all Capuano’s fault, but I’m also not saying it wasn’t. The Islanders have a talented roster and they’re starting to play like it under Doug Weight. Since the Michigan native took over the duties as the Isles bench boss, his team has come away with four wins in five tries as an underdog and has outscored opponents 19-10.

The Red Wings, however, have lost five straight games and have been shut out twice since January 22. Goaltending and defense have been a serious problem for the Wings as they’ve given up exactly four goals in three straight games.

This is not exactly how the people of Detroit wanted to close out the Joe Louis Arena, but with a 10-16 straight-up record at home so far, it doesn’t look like they’re going to have a choice.
