Futures Value in NHL’s Atlantic Division

Brendan Gallagher Montreal Canadiens NHL

As the Washington Capitals run away with the Metropolitan Division crown and the Los Angeles Kings distance themselves from the rest of the pack in the Pacific Division, good betting value can be hard to find when it comes to betting NHL division futures at this stage of the season.

Thankfully for us hockey bettors, the Atlantic Division exists.

True, the Central Division is still up for grabs, and with the Blackhawks closing the gap with the Dallas Stars, things are getting interesting there, but there are about six teams that can still make a push at the crown in the Atlantic.

Ahead of the action on Friday, January 15, the surprising Florida Panthers sit four points ahead of the Detroit Red Wings with 57 points. The Panthers used a 12-game winning streak to springboard themselves into the driver’s seat in the division race. But perhaps Wednesday’s 6-0 drubbing from the Calgary Flames is the game that brings one of the league’s best stories down to earth.

According to division futures at online shop TopBet, the Panthers are the favorites at +140, but some viable candidates are lurking in the shadows.

Take the Montreal Canadiens for instance. The Habs began the season as the best team in the league with many talking heads bringing up the idea of the Stanley Cup returning to Canada. Yes, they miss Carey Price and were desperately poor when Brendan Gallagher went down to injury, but this is a team that is not as bad as many are making them out to be and certainly have hit rock bottom already this season.

And we haven’t even discussed P.K. Subban, who has just two goals to his name, so he's poised for a breakout in the goalscoring column at some point this season.

Furthermore, let’s not forget that the Habs won the division by two points over the Tampa Bay Lightning last season while the Panthers finished in sixth with 91 points.

So what happens when you hit rock bottom? Well, there’s nowhere to go but up and with the Habs in that position at the midway point of the season, they could be one example of about five or six in the Atlantic Division poised to make a run at the division title.

Or, you just back the Panthers and enjoy the already exhilarating ride to the finish line.
