NHL Trade Deadline Betting Odds

March 1, NHL Trade Deadline Day. The most hyped-up non-hockey event of the entire season is right around the corner and with the rumor mill getting ready to spin off its moorings, this deadline could actually live up to its billing. Last year's coverage left a lot to be desired but with eight teams separated by just seven points in the middle of the Eastern Conference, margins could not be tighter and I'm expecting the lead-up to the deadline to be something of a de facto arms race.

Online sportsbook Bovada has set a variety of lines for deadline day and I’ll be breaking them down based on what I’ve been hearing and on what my wannabe general manager brain thinks might go down in the days to come.

Avalanche have completed their tumble to the bottom

It's tough to talk about the trade deadline without talking about the Colorado Avalanche. Currently 14 points behind the next worst team in the NHL, the Avs are prime trading partners for just about every other team in the league. They have two players specifically – Gabriel Landeskog and Matt Duchene –  who have been targeted heavily the last few weeks but reports are saying that the Colorado brass is asking for too much for the once-touted prospects.

To be fair, these guys were the second and third overall picks in their respective drafts and they're both signed for at least two more seasons. As of right now, it would take a hell of an offer to pry either of these talented forwards away from the atrocious Avalanche but I could see a team like the Canadiens, who have a closing window and a desperate need for a center, take a risk on Duchene.

I'm not particularly bullish on either of these lines but if I were to pick one of these mile-high players to be dealt, it would be Ducher. Colorado is fairly deep at center with Nathan MacKinnon and up-and-comer Mikhail Grigorenko and I would not be shocked if they shipped him for a first-round draft pick and a blue-chip prospect at the blue line.

All Hanz on Deck: One guy who will definitely be dealt

UPDATE: Hanzal has been dealt to the Minnesota Wild for a first-round pick, a second-round pick and a conditional draft pick to be named later.

Martin Hanzal should have his bags packed. He's having an excellent season with a brutal team and could make a massive difference to a roster in need of an imposing force at the center spot. The 6'6" Czech leads the Coyotes in faceoff winning percentage (55.5) as well as in goals with 12 and is the definition of a rental player as he'll become a UFA at the end of the season. Several teams could wind up with Hanzal but he'll most likely land with the Panthers, Senators or Canadiens.

Teams have been aggressively pursuing the 30-year-old and I could see him being traded before the deadline. I wouldn't take the risk here as all wagers will be settled with no action if players on the list are dealt before deadline day.

With most of the guys who were rumored to be main targets heading into the deadline already dealt, it looks like you're probably good to go ahead and take the UNDER on all these O/U lines.
