NHL Trade Deadline: Cup Futures Impact

There were plenty of NHL trade deadline deals, but none that moved the needle too much in terms of odds to win the Stanley Cup in 2014.

The New York Rangers' acquisition of Marty St. Louis from Tampa Bay saw their Cup futures shorten to 20-1 from 25-1 a day earlier, according to Bovada. And Los Angeles, which was rumoured to be after Thomas Vanek and Matt Moulson but which settled on Marian Gaborik, climbed from 16-1 to 12-1.

None of the Cup front runners made any major moves. In Pittsburgh, the injured Penguins added Marcel Goc from Florida and Lee Stempniak from Calgary. Chicago made minor deals earlier in the week, and Anaheim, believed to be in on Vanek, instead traded Dustin Penner and did not add anyone (other than injured blueliner Stephane Robidas from Dallas).

Boston tinkered, picking Corey Potter off waivers from Edmonton and getting Andrej Meszaros from Philly for a pick to bolster their blueline depth.

Vanek went to Montreal right at the buzzer for a pick and prospect winger Sebastian Collberg.
