NHL Weekend Odds: Wings are on a Run

The Detroit Red Wings will be gunning for their eighth SU win in their last 10 outings when they take on the Florida Panthers on Friday night as 5/6 moneyline favorites.

The Red Wings suffered their first loss in their last four on Wednesday night, dropping a 2-1 shootout decision to the red-hot Toronto Maple Leafs, failing to cover as heavy 1/2 moneyline home favorites.

The loss did not dampen the Red Wings’ surging Stanley Cup odds, which have improved dramatically during their current winning stretch, from 33/1 in late November to a current 16/1 at Bovada.

Detroit has struggled in recent matchups with the Panthers, who sit as an EVEN moneyline bet in Friday night’s matchup. The Wings have posted just two SU wins in their last five meetings overall with the Panthers, and are 1-3 SU in their last four meetings at Joe Louis Arena.

Things get no easier for the Wings when they travel to Toronto on Saturday for a return date with the Leafs. Detroit rides a two-game SU losing streak against their Original Six rivals into Saturday night’s Red Wings vs. Maple Leafs game at Air Canada Centre, but were SU winners in five of their previous six meetings.

Toronto is 5-1 SU in their last six, moving them to No. 10 in the NHL Power Rankings at OddsShark.com, but their strong play has done little for their Stanley Cup odds, which remain stalled at 33/1 at Bovada.

The Pittsburgh Penguins will look to extend their lead atop the Metropolitan Division on Friday night when they take on the surprising Calgary Flames as 5/4 moneyline favorites.

The Pens have dropped two of their last three in the past week, including a 3-0 shutout loss at home to the Vancouver Canucks last weekend, and have scored just 11 goals in their last six games, with the total playing UNDER in four of those six games.

Pittsburgh has also slipped slightly in NHL futures betting, falling from the top of the Stanley Cup betting odds at Bovada to 9/1, trailing the Chicago Blackhawks, who remain strong 11/2 favorites.

The Penguins travel to Columbus on Saturday for a tilt with the Blue Jackets, while the Central Division-leading Hawks visit the New York Islanders on Saturday before returning home for a Sunday evening matchup with the Flames.
