Trying to stay alive in their Stanley Cup campaign, the Nashville Predators will look to extend the streak that’s seen the home team win every game in this series and they’ll have to overcome an embarrassment in Pittsburgh in order to do it. The trophy will be in the building tonight for the first time in the best-of-seven and for the Preds, it will be the first time all postseason that they’ve been face-to-face with elimination.
From the stats and trends, it’s clear just how good home teams have been in this matchup but that doesn’t mean we can just pencil in a Game 7. The Penguins will be coming into tonight’s matchup with all the momentum and they’ll be facing a goalie in Pekka Rinne who they’ve now chased from the net on two separate occasions this series. If they beat him with an early one this evening, we could be seeing the Pens crowned in Nashville.
It’s been night-and-day for Rinne and he’s been a microcosm for the Preds’ successes at home and failures on the road. The Finn’s home save percentage through 10 playoff starts in Nashville is close to .950 and if the Preds force a Game 7 in Pittsburgh, it will be partly because of Rinne’s performance tonight.
An interesting point for the Pens tonight is that all four of their Stanley Cup wins have been clinched away from their home building. They’ll be pretty significant moneyline underdogs tonight and I don’t much care for historic trends so I don’t put a ton of stake in that point but the Pens do not want this thing to go seven and they’ll be throwing everything at Rinne tonight hoping they can put the final nail in the Preds’ coffin.
