Tampa Bay Lightning NHL

Lightning Closing the Gap with Panthers

Things are getting very interesting in the Atlantic Division as a six-game winning streak has propelled the Tampa Bay Lightning to within two points of the Florida Panthers at the top of the division. The Bolts continue their four-game road trip with a stop in Toronto to face the Maple Leafs Monday night.

Shark Bites
  • The Lightning are 2-6 SU in their last eight games on the road against the Maple Leafs.
  • The Maple Leafs are 2-7 SU in their last nine games at home.
  • The Lightning are 5-0 SU in their last five games against teams with losing records.

Atlantic Division teams have absolutely feasted on the bottom-feeding Leafs this season. The Buds have the worst record of any team in the league in games against clubs from within the division as they’ve gone 1-15 SU in 16 contests versus the Atlantic.

The Lightning have won both of their previous meetings with the Leafs this season, scoring a 5-4 overtime win at Air Canada Centre back on December 15 and a 1-0 triumph on home ice back on January 27. Going back a bit further, Tampa has won four of its last five meetings with the Leafs heading into Monday’s clash.

During their six-game streak, the Lightning have averaged a 2.17 margin of victory including a 4-1 win over the Boston Bruins Sunday. Four of their six wins have come on the road and the team will finish its road trip at the Ottawa Senators Thursday.

The Leafs traded netminder James Reimer to the San Jose Sharks over the weekend so it looks like it could very well be Jonathan Bernier between the pipes Monday. Bernier is 7-16-3 with a 3.12 goals against average and .898 saver percentage in 28 appearances (26 starts) this season. He was responsible for both losses against Tampa earlier this season.
