Nover: Origin of the Super Bowl Prop Bet

In between Super Bowl proposition bets such as what color Beyonce's footwear will be and if Donald Trump's name will be mentioned during the broadcast there actually will be a football game played between Carolina and Denver on Sunday.

Just how did all of these hundreds of off-the-wall Super Bowl props start anyways? I can tell you because I witnessed it first-hand.

Can McGregor Win in the First Minute?

Conor McGregor UFC

What can Conor McGregor do next? Well, for starters he’s looking to add the lightweight title to his resume, but a brash prediction made at the UFC 196 press conference has fight fans debating if McGregor has a quick finish in-store for Rafael dos Anjos.

McGregor boldly claimed that he would “dust Rafael inside one minute,” which has prompted online sportsbook Bovada to create a prop on the possibility of the prediction coming to light. The book has Yes at +700, and No coming back at -2000.

Wizards are No Match for Warriors in DC

Klay Thompson John Wall

The Golden State Warriors seemingly find success everywhere they go, and it’s no different in the nation’s capital. In the Warriors’ last five trips to D.C., they’re 5-0 SU and 4-1 ATS. Stephen Curry and company will renew acquaintances with the Wizards in Washington on Wednesday.

Shark Bites
  • The total has gone OVER in six of the Warriors' last eight games with two days off between games.
  • The Warriors are 2-6 ATS in their last eight games on the road in February.
  • The Wizards are 11-3 ATS in their last 14 games after an ATS loss.

The Warriors (44-4 SU, 29-18-1 ATS) are catching the Wizards (21-25 SU, 23-23 ATS) at the right time. Washington is a paltry 1-4 SU and ATS heading into the tilt. After dropping two of three in mid January, the Warriors are flying high once again, winning eight straight while going 5-3 ATS in that span.

Curry hasn’t been his normal dominant self as of late, but fellow splash brother Klay Thompson has picked up the slack in his place. Curry is averaging 16.7 points on 18-of-47 shooting from the field in the last three matchups, while Thompson is averaging 37 points and is 42-of-64 from the field.

If the Wizards are going to contain the Warriors (the team with the best offense in the league), they’re going to make some major changes on the defensive end of the floor. Randy Wittman’s club have allowed opponents to average 115 points in their prior five games.

Faves Faltering Between Irish and ‘Canes

Both Notre Dame and Miami have been middling within the ACC this season and are in need of a win Wednesday if they want to get back into contention for the conference crown. However, this rivalry has often been hard to predict as the favorites are just 3-7 ATS in the past 10 meetings between the Fighting Irish and the Hurricanes.

Miami has been great at home within ACC play this season, as they are 4-0 SU and 3-0-1 ATS at the BankUnited Center with an average scoring margin of +12.8 points per game. Sheldon McClellan has been a dominant force for The U ever since the start of conference play as the senior has averaged 17.8 points while shooting 48 percent from the floor.

Zach Auguste has been the leader for Notre Dame this season as he has notched 12 double-doubles on the season, including three in the past four games. Notre Dame's defense has been an issue with the Irish surrendering 78 points per game in their losses while sporting one of the worst defensive efficiencies in the country.

Lightning Look to Extend Home Streak

Dylan Larkin Steven Stamkos Red WIngs Lightning NHL

The Detroit Red Wings and Tampa Bay Lightning enjoyed an extra day of rest when the NHL resumed its post-All-Star schedule Tuesday night, but the two Atlantic Division foes, dead even with 58 points apiece, square off at Amalie Arena Wednesday night.

Shark Bites
  • The Red Wings are 2-6 SU in their last eight versus the Lightning in Tampa Bay.
  • Total has gone OVER in eight of the Lightning’s last 10 games versus the Eastern Conference.
  • The Lightning are 6-1 SU in their last seven games after a win in their previous game.

The Bolts, presently -160 in moneyline markets at Bovada, have strung together a six-game winning streak on home ice, including a 1-0 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs in their last home contest prior to the break. Tampa was dynamite in January, winning nine of its 11 games in the month.

The Red Wings entered the All-Star Break rather tepid as they won just three of their final seven games. They did, however, defeat the New York Islanders 4-2 in their final contest and for as strong as Tampa has been at home, the Wings have been every bit their equal in their travels winning seven of their last eight games on the road.

The division rivals have already played twice this season with the Wings winning 3-1 on October 13 and 2-1 on November 3 - both games in the Motor City.

According to Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Bay Tribune, head coach Jon Cooper has already stated that Ben Bishop will get the start in the crease with the Wings in town. The Lighting’s netminder started both of those aforementioned games and played well, giving up four goals on 52 shots en route to a tough pair of losses.

Kansas Has Dominated In-State Rivalry

The Kansas Jayhawks have been inconsistent this season and their past five games is a microcosm of this, as they have alternated wins and losses with their offense streaky at best. Kansas will look to collect their first back-to-back wins in three weeks when they take on the Kansas State Wildcats Wednesday. The in-state rivalry has been pretty one-sided as Kansas is 25-5 SU in the last 30 against Kansas State and 12-5 ATS in the past 17.

Offense has been hard to project for Kansas lately as they have averaged 67.3 points in their past three losses and 78.7 in their past three wins. Perry Ellis continues to lead the Kansas attack as the senior has averaged 16.3 points per game this season and has tallied double-digit points in the past 16 games.

Kansas State has lost their past 11 road games within the Big 12, including being outscored by an average of 8.9 points in those affairs. Wesley Iwundu has been the top scorer for Kansas State this season (12.2 ppg), but has averaged just 5.3 points in his career against the Jayhawks.

Clock Ticking on Habs' Playoff Chances

Alex Galchenyuk Montreal Canadiens NHL

The Montreal Canadiens began life after the All-Star break the same way as they entered it: by losing. They’ve now got to put Tuesday’s loss behind them as they entertain the Buffalo Sabres Wednesday.

Shark Bites
  • The Canadiens are 1-6 SU in their last seven games following a loss in their previous game.
  • The total has gone UNDER in seven of Montreal’s last nine games at home.
  • The Sabres are 1-4 SU in their last five games against teams from the Atlantic Division.

Wayne Simmonds notched a pair of goals and Jakub Voracek tallied three assists as the Philadelphia Flyers downed the Habs 4-2 Tuesday. To add insult to injury, the Flyers leapfrogged the Canadiens in the Eastern standings. Montreal now sits 12th in the standings and is in danger of being passed by the Ottawa Senators.

The Sabres could be the team that fuels a resurgence in Montreal, however. The two have met once this season and the Canadiens put up their best offensive effort of the season, winning 7-2 back on October 23. Defenseman Andrei Makrov recorded one goal and four assists in that game and it was actually one of Mike Condon’s rare starts while Carey Price was healthy, though early reports name Ben Scrivens as Montreal’s starter between the pipes Wednesday.

In addition to that loss back in October, the Sabres have gone just 3-7 SU in their 10 games against the Canadiens.

The clock is ticking on the Canadiens’ season, so if they want the playoffs to be a real possibility, they’ll have to get results sooner rather than later and the Sabres could be the team that is the opponent they need to face to their turnaround.

UNDER Hot When Cavs and Hornets Meet

The Cleveland Cavaliers-Charlotte Hornets tilt may not be the most attractive matchup on Wednesday’s NBA slate, however it’s going to be appealing to totals bettors. The UNDER has been a sizzling hot bet when the Eastern Conference foes collide, evidenced by seven of the previous eight meetings between the clubs going below the closing total.

Shark Bites
  • The Cavaliers are 17-7 ATS in their last 24 games against the Southeast Division.
  • The Hornets are 2-8 SU and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games after losing the previous game in a matchup.
  • The Cavaliers are 10-1 SU in their last 11 games on the road.

The Cavs (35-12 SU, 21-23-3 ATS) kept their five-game winning streak alive on Monday thanks to a 116-106 overtime victory over the Indiana Pacers. Cleveland has gone 3-1-1 ATS during the streak, and are also a solid 3-0 ATS in their previous three versus the Hornets.

The Hornets (23-25 SU, 23-24-1 ATS) are starting to get it together after having an up and down start to the campaign. Charlotte has won four of its last six despite getting some poor performances from its top player, Kemba Walker, who’s shooting 29.5 percent from the floor and 27.3 percent from deep in his last five contests.

Another trend that will appeal to UNDER bettors is the Hornets have cashed UNDER bets in four of their last five at home. On the season, the OVER/UNDER is 9-15 at Time Warner Cable Arena.

Will this be the Most Bet Super Bowl Ever?

Las Vegas

Last year during the weekend of Super Bowl XLIX as I ambled through a parlay of sportsbooks from one end of Las Vegas to the other, I noticed something was a little different than in my past visits there.

Pony tails. Lots of ‘em. And I don’t mean man buns either.
