Giants Poised to Take Battle For The Bay Area

The Athletics will offer up rookie Daniel Mengden (0-3, 3.00 ERA) to the red-hot Giants in an interleague matchup Monday that will see the Shark, Jeff Samardzija, pitch against one of his former teams.

SHARK BITES
The Giants are 7-1 in their last 8 games at home.
The Giants are 12-2 in their last 14 games against teams with losing records.
The Athletics are 2-7 in their last nine games against the National League.

Samardzija has been great since his move back to the Bay Area, seeing his ERA drop from 4.96 in 2015 to 3.59 this year. In five starts in San Francisco this year, the Shark is 3-1 with a 3.06 ERA. The righty has been as inconsistent lately as my ability to correctly spell his last name. He lasted just three innings in his last outing, allowing six runs. This touch-up came on the heels of a complete-game win against the Rays.

Mengdon has lost all three of his first Major League games after being called up from Triple-A Nashville. He has pitched decent enough, posting two quality starts in his short tenure with the big club, but has received hardly any run support from an Oakland team that is 26th in runs scored.

Cardinals' Recent Road Success Could Stall at Kauffman

The Astros proved that the Royals can be beaten at home as they came away with two of three games at Kauffman Stadium over the weekend, marking only the second time KC has lost a series at home this year. The Royals will attempt to rectify their home record as they open up an interleague series with the Cardinals on Monday.

SHARK BITES
The Cardinals are 4-0 in their last four games against the Royals.
The Royals are 13-3 in their last 16 games at home.
The Cardinals are 9-2 in their last 11 games with Wainwright as their starting pitcher.

KC is still the best home team in the league with a 26-10 standing at Kauffman and will send Danny Duffy (2-1, 3.38 ERA) to the mound in a matchup vs the veteran Adam Wainwright (6-4, 4.73 ERA).

Coming off an injury-riddled 2015, Wainwright hasn’t quite rediscovered his “ace” stuff and is starting to show his age. On the road this year, Wainwright has posted a 5.74 ERA in eight starts. The righty's record this year has been inflated by the ridiculous amount of run support he is receiving from one of the best offenses in the league.

Duffy is one of the only pitchers on the Royals' roster who has worse numbers at home than he does on the road. In four starts at Kauffman, the lefty has given up seven home runs and posted an ERA of 4.88.

Slumping Cubs look to Arrieta to get back on track

Losers of six of their last seven games, the Chicago Cubs are slumping for the first time this season and a three game set with the lowly Cincinnati Reds can’t come any sooner. After dropping three of four to the Marlins over the weekend, Jake Arrieta will take the mound and attempt to add to a trend that’s seen the Cubs go 9-1 in their last 10 games vs the Reds.

Shark Bites

In 83 combined at-bats, Reds hitters have a .193 AVG and 0 HR’s vs Arrieta

The Cubs are 21-9 in their last 30 games against other NL Central teams

The Cubs are 11-4 O/U in their last 15 games with Jake Arrieta as the starting pitcher

You might recall Arrieta’s last start against in Cincinatti this season — it was a no-hitter where the Cubs humiliated the Reds 16-0. When looking at Arrieta’s splits this season, it’s his starts in the night that really stick out as he’s gone 4-0 with an absolutely foolish 0.24 ERA in five night starts. That’s one earned run in five night starts. That’s some next level stuff.

As for the Reds, they’ll send Dan Straily to the mound. He’s been much better at home this season — 2.60 home ERA vs 5.22 on the road. In two appearances vs the Cubs this season, he has a 6.43 ERA.

The total for tonight’s game opened at 8 runs. The total has gone OVER in eight of the last nine games between these clubs.

Streaking Rangers Open Long Road Trip vs. Yankees

The Texas Rangers open a 10-game road trip by visiting the New York Yankees on Monday in the first contest of a four-game series. The Rangers put 23 runs on the board while taking two of three against the Boston Red Sox over the weekend.

Shark Bites
  • The Rangers are 4-1 SU in their last five games against the Yankees.
  • The total has gone OVER in three of the Rangers' last four games with Chi Chi Gonzalez as the starting pitcher.
  • The Rangers are 6-0 SU in their last six games on the road.

Chi Chi Gonzalez and Ivan Nova are expected to get the ball. Gonzalez (4-6, 3.90 ERA) is making the start as a result of injuries to three Rangers’ starters. The 24-year-old is 3-6 with a 5.04 ERA at Triple-A Round Rock in 14 starts in the minors this year.

Nova (5-5, 5.18) has failed to make it through six innings in each of his last two eoutings, getting ripped for a total of 11 runs and 18 hits in those nine innings.

UNDER bettors love seeing these teams collide at Yankee Stadium. The UNDER is 6-2 in the last eight matchups between the Rangers and Yanks in the Bronx.

OVER Hot Between Dodgers and Pirates at PNC Park

The Pittsburgh Pirates are set to wrap up their eight-game homestand on Monday, and they can complete a four-game sweep over the Los Angeles Dodgers with a win. The Bucs have scored 18 runs in their three wins against the Dodgers.

Shark Bites
  • The Dodgers are 0-5 SU in their last five games against the Pirates.
  • The Pirates are 1-5 SU in their last six games after winning as an underdog.
  • The Dodgers are 9-3 SU in their last 12 games during the afternoon.

Scott Kazmir and Francisco Liriano are slated to get the ball for the Dodgers and Pirates, respectively. Kazmir (5-3, 4.52 ERA) is unbeaten in his last eight starts but has not factored in the decision five times during that span. Liriano (4-7, 5.17) has dropped four of his last five outings, yielding at least four runs in each of them while issuing a total of 24 walks in 31.5 innings.

When the Dodgers and Pirates play at PNC Park, high-scoring affairs tend to follow. The OVER is 5-1 in the last six matchups between the NL Clubs in the Steel City.
