Hernandez and Liriano Both in Search of Brighter Skies

The Mariners and Pirates will set sail on an interleague series tonight as they each send pitchers to the mound – Felix Hernandez (4-4, 3.23 ERA) and Francisco Liriano (6-9, 4.96 ERA) – who are merely shadows of their former selves.

SHARK BITES
The Mariners are 5-0 in their last 5 games after a loss.
The Pirates are 3-7 in their last 10 games with Liriano as the starting pitcher.
The total has gone UNDER in 7 of the Mariners' last 9 games against the Pirates.

Seattle is 9-3 in interleague play this season and will be hoping for the real Hernandez tonight to keep that train rolling. In his first start back from a lengthy DL stint, King Felix got slapped around for 10 hits at Safeco. Hernandez seems to have dropped off a cliff this year and has lost velocity on his fastball. Things aren’t looking good, but the man he will face tonight has looked even worse.

If Hernandez fell off a cliff this year, Liriano jumped off a mountain – and he didn’t fall inside the strike zone. The lefty’s ERA has hovered around five all year and has a WHIP over 1.50 – that’s awful. He has been limiting teams to a few fewer runs recently but it’s hard to have confidence in a guy who leads the league in issued walks.

This is an ugly one that seems like a coin flip. It may be a safer play to try a total bet – I’m thinking the OVER.

Baseball’s Best Teams Against Baseball’s Best Teams

Much more goes into measuring how good a team is than just taking a look at their regular season record. Sure, a team like the Giants can pad their record by beating up on the Rockies, Padres and D-backs all season — all teams with losing records — but wins won’t come easy come playoff time against the best the league has to offer. With that said, maybe the best measurement for how good a team actually is, is how they fare against strong competition, so let’s take a look at a few standout teams in that situation.

PGA Championship: Sleeper Picks

Betting on golf can be an exhilarating endeavor, but it can also be an extremely frustrating one.

That’s why it’s important to pick your spots when it comes to finding long shot value. With this year’s edition of the PGA Championship almost here, I’ve set my sights on three specific golfers who could create big payouts if they can take home the hardware.

Here are my three PGA Championship sleeper picks:

Atlético MG, Sport e Santos vencem e investidores comemoram

Holly Holm joga favoritismo no lixo e perde segunda seguida no UFC; Barboza vence

Reds and Giants Have a Penchant for Going OVER

The San Francisco Giants have been slumping since the All-Star break, but a series with the lowly Cincinnati Reds could be just what the doctor ordered to get them back on track.

Shark Bites
  • The Reds are 2-7 SU in their last nine games against the Giants.
  • The total has gone UNDER in eight of the Giants' last 10 games.
  • The Reds are 2-7 SU in their last nine games after winning the previous game in a matchup.

Anthony DeSciafani and Jake Peavy are the probable starters. DeSciafani (5-0, 2.50 ERA) has posted six straight quality starts while lasting eight innings in two of them. The 26-year-old has not walked a batter in his last three outings.

Peavy (5-8, 5.15) was pounded for a season-high seven earned runs in a loss at Cincinnati on May 4, but the veteran is still 7-1 with a 2.92 ERA in his career against the Reds.

OVER bettors love seeing these teams collide. In the last nine matchups between the squads, the OVER is 8-1.

High-Flying Cubs Host Turbulent White Sox in Windy City Clash

Two teams that are trending in opposite directions are set to square off on Monday when the Chicago Cubs tangle with the White Sox in a Windy City showdown at U.S. Cellular Field.

Shark Bites
  • The total has gone UNDER in four of the White Sox' last five games with a closing total of 8.5 or less.
  • The total has gone UNDER in five of the Cubs' last six games with a closing total of 8.5 or less.
  • The White Sox are 5-2 SU in their last seven games against teams with winning records.

Jake Arrieta and Miguel Gonzalez are slated to take the bump. Arrieta (12-4, 2.60 ERA) is 3-1 with a 3.82 ERA in six career starts against the White Sox, including a pair of victories last season. Gonzalez (2-5, 4.41) has posted four straight quality starts yet owns just one win over his last seven outings.

Home field advantage has been non-existent in this series. In the last 11 meetings between the White Sox and Cubbies, visiting teams are 8-3.
