Can Mickelson Finally Win the U.S. Open?

Phil Mickelson PGA

Phil Mickelson is inarguably one of the most decorated players on the PGA Tour, but the man they call Lefty has yet to accomplish one specific feat: win the U.S. Open. He’ll have an opportunity to finally hoist the championship trophy when the 2016 U.S. Open kicks off at Oakmont Country Club on Thursday.

Mickelson has come excruciatingly close to winning the tournament, finishing as a runner-up on six occasions (1999, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2009 and 2013). The 45-year-old has won five other major tournaments, including the Masters three times.

The WNBA Bet You Should Be Making

This time of year can be dominated with thoughts of the NBA and NHL Finals, but bettors looking for some legit value should be focusing on the much-maligned WNBA. For every joke and jab the WNBA has to endure, bettors find themselves twice as much value that most will never see.

Though we are still early in the WNBA season, there still remains a perfect bet after nine games. The Washington Mystics have gone OVER in each and every game this season. In fact – dating back to last season – the Mystics have gone OVER in 15 consecutive games.

Streaking Rockies are Cashing Tickets

The surprising Colorado Rockies have been getting the job done, but they haven’t been making it easy on themselves. Colorado, which has won five of its last six, blew a nine-run lead before holding on to win a crazy game over the New York Yankees on Tuesday by a score of 13-10. Colorado can complete a brief two-game interleague sweep of the Yanks on Wednesday afternoon.

Shark Bites
  • The Yankees are 2-6 SU in their last 8 games on the road.
  • The Rockies are 4-10 SU in their last 14 games as a moneyline underdog of -105 or more.
  • The Yankees are 1-5 OU in their last 6 games after losing the previous game in a matchup.

Ivan Nova and Chad Bettis are slated to get the start for the Yankees and Rockies, respectively. Nova (5-3, 4.39 ERA) won his second-straight outing by holding the L.A. Angels to three runs over 6.5 innings in his last outing, but that was the first time he’s allowed fewer than four runs over his last four starts.

Bettis (4-5, 5.85) is stuck in an ugly four-start winless street, but he recorded a no-decision in his last outing against the Pirates despite allowing five runs over three innings. Bettis has given up six home runs while allowing 22 runs over 16.5 innings in his last four starts.

OVER Blistering When Rangers, A’s Meet

If you want to see runs galore and pitchers dreading their existence, then you should be watching the Texas Rangers and Oakland Athletics series continue Wednesday. The two teams have gone OVER in eight of their past nine outings with an average of 12.6 runs per game. In just their two games so far this series, the Rangers and A’s have combined for 35 runs.

Shark Bites
  • The Rangers are 11-2 in their past 13 games as underdogs.
  • Rougned Odor is just 2-for-21 with six strikeouts in his career against Sonny Gray.
  • The OVER is 7-2 in the A’s past nine games with Sonny Gray as the starting pitcher.

Derek Holland will hope to end his recent struggles when he takes the bump for the Rangers. Holland has posted a 6.81 ERA in his past seven starts with leftie not seeing the end of the third inning twice in that span.

Sonny Gray has been inconsistent – at best – this season, but has dominated the Rangers during his young career. Gray – who has a 5.34 ERA this year - is 7-3 with a 1.92 in 10 career starts against the Rangers while averaging 7.0 innings pitched.

Sox’ Sale Struggling at US Cellular

Chris Sale (10-2, 2.87 ERA) will take the mound for the White Sox in a Wednesday night matchup vs Mike Pelfrey (1-6, 4.68 ERA) and the Detroit Tigers a day after these two teams put up a combined 19 runs.

SHARK BITES
The Tigers are 5-1 in their last six games against the White Sox.
The White Sox are 11-3 in their last 14 games with Chris Sale as the starting pitcher.
The total has gone OVER in four of the Tigers' last five games against the White Sox.

Sale had a start to the season that made him everyone’s darling to take home the AL Cy Young, in his last 7 games however, the lanky White Sox ace has seen his ERA climb from a stingy 1.66 to 2.87. In his last outing vs the Tigers on June 4, Sale allowed 4 runs on 9 hits through 6.1 innings.

The Tigers head in to Wednesday night's matchup as +160 road dogs and have a few things going for them, including Sale’s home/away splits. In 2016, The lefty has an ERA of 3.89 at US Cellular, and a 2.09 ERA on the road.

The boys from Motor City have been hot against teams in the AL Central lately, winning 7 of their last 8 vs division rivals.

Mets' Bats Have Gone Silent

The New York Mets have been having all sorts of offensive issues as of late, and those problems reached a new low on Tuesday when Pittsburgh Pirates’ rookie Jameson Taillon took a no-hitter into the seventh inning in his second career start. The NL clubs will square off once again on Wednesday in the Big Apple.

Shark Bites
  • The Mets are 5-2 SU in their last seven games after consecutive losses.
  • The Pirates are 4-1 SU in their last five games with Jeff Locke as the starting pitcher.
  • The total has gone UNDER in four of the Mets' last five games at home.

New York has dropped 10 of its last 16 games and is scoring an average of 2.7 runs in that span. Noah Syndergaard (6-2, 2.00 ERA) is searching for his first career win against Pittsburgh, but is 2-1 with a 1.96 ERA at home on the season.

Jeff Locke (5-4, 5.38) threw a three-hit shutout at Miami on May 30 and followed it up with with seven stellar outings in a win over the L.A. Angels on June 4.

The Bucs have absolutely dominated the Mets in recent meetings, claiming 10 of their last 11 matchups with the Metropolitans.

Cubs Have Been Too Much For Nats

Though the Washington Nationals and Chicago Cubs will play the rubber match in their series on Wednesday, the Cubbies have been dominating the Nats in recent outings - with Chicago winning seven of the past eight meetings. That’s not to say those games have not been close as four of those eight victories have come by two runs or fewer.

Shark Bites
  • The UNDER is 13-5 in the Cubs’ past 18 games.
  • Jason Hammel has held batters to a .184 batting average with runners in scoring position.
  • The UNDER is 3-0 in the past three between the Cubs and Nationals.

Stephen Strasburg is the lone flawless pitcher left in the MLB with the strikeout machine going 10-0 in his first 13 starts – with the Nationals going 12-1 in those outings. Strasburg has recorded double-digit strikeouts in four of his past five games while averaging 8.5 K’s per game this year.

Jason Hammel had one of his worst outings of the season when he faced the Nationals on May 7, as the righty allowed three earned runs while last just 5.0 innings. Hammel has quietly been one of the most consistent batters in the MLB – it’s easy to go unnoticed when you’re in the same rotation as Jake Arrieta – with the 10-year veteran allowing more than three runs in an outing just once.
