Mets Cruising In Afternoon Games

New York Mets Chicago White Sox

The New York Mets will take to Citi Field for an afternoon game when they close out their series with the Chicago White Sox Wednesday. The Mets have been one of the best daytime teams in the league and enter their affair with the ChiSox riding a four-game winning streak in early outings.

Jacob deGrom – who takes to the mound for the Mets – is coming off his best start of the month. That outing saw deGrom pitch seven innings of three-hit baseball while giving up just one run. deGrom has gone 3-0 with a 2.79 ERA in five previous day starts this season.

Miguel Gonzalez has been doing a pretty good job at solidifying the back of the White Sox rotation after being signed to a minor league contract in Spring Training. After a rocky first outing with the club, the righty has posted a 3.57 ERA in his past four starts.

Don't Ignore This Game 1 NHL Stat

What’s the most important game in a Stanley Cup final?

The easy answer might be the game that clinches the championship ring. The right answer, though, could actually be Game 1.

The winner of Game 1 in the Cup finals has gone on to win the series 77.6 percent of the time in seven-game series (59-17 according to the site Whowins.com).

I’ll just let that sink in a little.

History on Pens’ Side After Game 1 Win

Pittsburgh Penguins hockey NHL Stanley Cup

The Pittsburgh Penguins jumped out to a 1-0 series lead over the San Jose Sharks after a 3-2 win in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final. If history is any indication, and it often is, then the odds of a Stanley Cup parade in the Steel City look great after the Game 1 win.

Looking at a few different sample sizes, it’s all good news for the Penguins and their backers. Over the last 20 years, only five teams who lost Game 1 came back to win the Stanley Cup.

Angels Flying High Against Tigers

It has been a season of inconsistency for the Los Angeles Angels, but a weekday series against the Detroit Tigers could cure what ails them. The Halos have won 10 of the last 11 meetings between the two clubs overall and eight straight at Angels Stadium.

Hector Santiago is coming off his two worst starts of the season after he failed to make it through the third inning in either outing while allowing 10 combined runs. The entire month of May has seen the lefty struggle to a 6.35 ERA – that number was also decreased greatly by an eight inning, two-hit outing against the Mariners.

The Tigers will send mediocrity incarnate to the mound when Anibal Sanchez starts Tuesday. The Tigers have dropped each of Sanchez’ past five starts with the righty going 0-4 with a 6.00 ERA while surrendering six home runs in that span.

UNDER Red-Hot When LAD, CHC Clash

Offense has been at a premium when the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs meet and that has caused a boon of UNDERs for bettors. The UNDER has hit in each of the past eight contests between the Dodgers and Cubs - with the two teams’ combining for 4.25 runs per game.

The Cubbies will send the bearded wonder Jake Arrieta to the mound, who is actually one of the best OVER pitchers in baseball. Arrieta has posted a ridiculous 1.72 ERA and has only allowed a combined 13 earned runs through his first 10 starts, but the Cubs have given him 8.1 runs of support per outing – the third highest in the MLB.

Widely inconsistent Scott Kazmir will take to the bump for the Dodgers Tuesday. Kazmir has 12 strikeouts through six innings in his last outing, but walked seven through just 5.2 innings in the previous game.

Marlins Offering Little Challenge to Pirates

The Pittsburgh Pirates have faced little difficulty when taking on the Miami Marlins with the Bucs winning nine of the past 10 when the teams clash. The Pirates rolled over the Marlins in the first game of the series Monday with a 10-0 victory.

The Marlins will hope that ace Jose Fernandez can end their losing ways against the Pirates when he takes to the bump Tuesday. Fernandez has been automatic in his recent starts with the righty going 6-0 with a 1.89 ERA and 58 strikeouts in his past six starts.

The Pirates will counter with their own streaking pitcher, as Gerrit Cole gets the start. Cole is 3-0 with a 1.04 ERA in his past four starts Those four starts have seen Cole surrender just three earned runs while posting a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 19-to-6.

Estrada Has Been An Under Machine

The Toronto Blue Jays will send Marco Estrada to the mound to kickoff their weekday series with the New York Yankees Monday – which means the UNDER may be worth a look. The UNDER is 10-2 in Estrada’s past 12 starts dating back to last season with the righty allowing an average of 1.92 earned runs per outing in that span.

The Yankees will give the start to Ivan Nova who has been a solid part of the rotation since being promoted from the bullpen. Nova has a 2.74 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP in his four starts so far this season.

After an inconsistent first month to the season, Edwin Encarnacion has started to find his groove at the plate for the Jays. That could be a concern for Nova, as Encarnacion has a lifetime .344 batting average with seven RBIs against the righty.

Josh Tomlin Is MLB’s Best Money Pitcher

Josh Tomlin has been one of the most underrated pitchers in the MLB dating back to the end of last season with the Cleveland Indians winning each of the pitchers past 11 starts – including all eight this season. Tomlin is the top money pitcher in baseball with bettors being up $783 if you wagered $100 on each of his starts this season. Tomlin will take to the mound for his ninth start of the season when the Tribe host the Texas Rangers Monday.

Derrick Holland – who takes the bump for the Rangers – will look to end his horrid month with a victory. Holland is 0-3 with a 9.68 ERA during four starts in May – though that number is inflated by his first two starts in which he allowed 15 earned runs across 5.0 innings.

Mike Napoli has been the most consistent bats in the Indians’ lineup over the past couple weeks. The first baseman is 7-for-22 with seven runs during his current six-game hitting streak.

Sox Look To End Skid vs Struggling Harvey

The Chicago White Sox have looked downright terrible over the past three weeks with the team going 4-11 in their past 15 which includes L’s in each of their past six. The ChiSox will look to try and keep themselves a few games over .500 when they start a series with the New York Mets Monday.

The White Sox have the luxury of stepping into the plate with Matt Harvey starting them down Monday. Harvey’s recent struggles have been well documented – with ‘The Dark Knight’ posting a 6.08 ERA this season and allowing a combined 16 runs in his past three starts.

Jose Quintana – who will take the bump for the White Sox – has been quietly dealing this season. The lefty has a 2.22 ERA on the season and has recorded a quality start in eight of his 10 outings.
