Penguins Sizzling at the Right Time

Sidney Crosby Pittsburgh Penguins NHL

Momentum is a huge factor when looking to back a team in Stanley Cup futures come playoff time and right now, there is no squad playing better hockey than the Pittsburgh Penguins. The sizzling Pens will look to extend their winning streak to eight games when they face the NHL’s best team, the Washington Capitals, Thursday night.

Shark Bites
  • The Capitals are 23-6 SU in their last 29 home games.
  • The Penguins are 7-0 SU in their last seven games on the road.
  • The Penguins are 9-0 SU in their last nine games with one day off between games.

Online shop Bovada is presently offering the Caps at -135 on home ice while the Pens are +105. As far as the total is concerned, OVER 5.5 goals is EVEN odds while UNDER 5.5 goals is -130.

The Pens have shot up the standings and now have the second-most points in the Eastern Conference with 102; still 15 back of the Capitals, but an impressive surge nonetheless considering where they were in December.

Going back a little further, Pittsburgh has actually won 13 of their previous 14 games and thumped the Caps 6-2 back on March 20.

The Caps have been on cruise control entering the postseason as they’ve lost back-to-back games and four of their last six. The teams have split four meetings this season with each winning once on home ice and once in the other’s barn.

Braden Holtby is confirmed to start in the crease for the Caps. Holtby has started all four games versus the Pens this season and has a goals against average of 2.65 and a .920 save percentage in those games.

Raps on a Roll Against the Hawks

Toronto Raptors

Phillips Arena will play host to two top three Eastern Conference teams with the Raptors attempting to continue a run that’s seen them win four straight SU and ATS over the Hawks. The Raps are also 8-2 SU and ATS in their last 10 matchups with the Hawks. In their three games against each other this season, Toronto has an average win margin of 8.6 points.

The Hawks opened the day as 6.5-point favorites and the favorite team is 6-2 ATS in the last eight games in this matchups. With this being the first game of a back-to-back for the Raptors, there’s speculation that DeMar DeRozan and/or Kyle Lowry could get a night off, so bettors will want to closely monitor lineup activity throughout the day. Being an underdog is a role the Raptors have responded well to recently, posting a 6-1 ATS record in their last seven games as an underdog of 6-points or more.

Tonight’s total opened at 200 — a mark the teams have gone OVER, UNDER and equaled in their three games this season.

LAD Looking To Continue Impressive Run

Dodgers Giants

The Los Angeles Dodgers enter their second series of the year against the San Francisco Giants looking mighty impressive. The Dodgers are 3-0 while outscoring their opponents 25-0, though keep in mind those games were against the destitute San Diego Padres.

Left-hander Alex Wood will get the start, but the youngster has struggled since being acquired by the Dodgers. Wood, who joined the team midway through last season in a trade with the Atlanta Braves, posted a 3.84 ERA while walking 23 batters in 12 starts for the Dodgers. Wood also struggled through Spring Training with an ERA of 7.13.

The Giants will start Jake Peavy, who has always confounded Dodgers’ batters with the righty going 14-3 with a 2.38 ERA lifetime against LA. Peavy missed several months last season and struggled upon his return, but the veteran allowed just eight runs through his final six starts of the year.

Red Wings can Clinch with Win Thursday

Detroit Red Wings Boston Bruins NHL

In what could prove to be the most important game of the season for either team, the Detroit Red Wings visit the Boston Bruins in a pivotal, penultimate game for each squad. A win for the Wings cements the No. 3 spot in the Atlantic Division while the Bruins need a win to fend off the Philadelphia Flyers and keep their playoff hopes alive.

Shark Bites
  • The Red Wings are 1-8 SU in their last nine games with zero days off.
  • The Bruins are 1-6 SU in their last seven games versus teams with winning records.
  • OVER is 3-0 in Detroit’s last three games versus teams with winning records.

The Bruins are presently -155 in moneyline markets at online shop Bovada while the Red Wings are +125. The total is tabbed at 5 goals with OVER at -130 and UNDER at EVEN odds.

The Red Wings scored a huge 3-0 victory over the aforementioned Flyers Wednesday night and have now won three-consecutive games. They sit two points up on the Bruins in the Atlantic Division and will be gunning for two points in Beantown Thursday.

The Bruins are trending the other way having lost back-to-back games and going 2-7-1 in their last 10 games. A five game losing streak toward the end of March has really damaged the Bruins’ playoff hopes but a win Thursday coupled with a Flyers’ loss (vs Toronto Maple Leafs) will provide a big boost.

Klopp Returns to Dortmund in Europa

Jurgen Klopp Liverpool Europa League

There are some quality clubs left as the Europa League moves into the quarterfinals, but no matchup is bigger than Liverpool-Borussia Dortmund. Not only are the sides of considerable quality, but Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp will make his return to Dortmund, where he led the club to two Budesliga titles.

Lakers a Good Bet as Double-Digit Dogs

Roommates will square off tonight at Staples Center as the Lakers will take a turn “hosting” the Clippers. It’s the second game in a home-and-home series which saw the Clippers run over the non-Showtime Lakers last night, 103-81 while covering a 14.5-point spread.

Last night’s double-digit spread is a spot the Lakers have been performing well in, however, especially at home, as the team has gone 7-3 ATS this season as double-digit home underdogs. Covering big spreads hasn’t been the Clippers forte as they’re just 6-10 ATS on the year as double-digit faves. The teams have faced off three times this season, with the Lakers going 0-3 SU, but 2-1 ATS, once again facing a double-digit spread in each game.

Big spreads aside, the battle of Los Angeles has been a one-sided beatdown with the Clippers swinging the hammer, winning 10 straight games over the Lakers. The Clips are also on a good run in the second games of back-to-backs, going 9-2 SU in their last 11 games in that spot.

These two have gone UNDER the total in six straight games against each other. The total for tonight’s game opened at 207 — a mark they went UNDER last night and in their previous five contests against each other.

Blazers on the Brink of Playoff Berth

Damian Lillard Terry Stotts Portland Trail Blazers NBA

The Portland Trail Blazers enter Wednesday’s schedule as one of the NBA’s hottest teams and have a magic number of one to punch their ticket to the postseason. A home win versus the Oklahoma City Thunder Wednesday evening would wrap up a postseason berth and continue a sizzling streak of performances on their home floor.

Shark Bites
  • The favorite is 14-3 SU in the last 17 games between these two teams.
  • The visitor is 0-5 SU in the last five games between these two teams.
  • OVER has cashed in four of the Thunder’s previous five games on the road.

The Blazers have won seven-straight games at home and have gone 4-3 against the spread in those contests. They have been on fire on the offensive end of the floor, averaging a whopping 112.14 points per game while their opponents have recorded 99.4 ppg over that stretch.

The two teams have faced each other three times so far this season with the Thunder going 2-0 SU and ATS on their home floor and the Blazers going 1-0 SU and ATS in the one other game at the Moda Center back on January 10.

OKC has already clinched the No. 3 seed and recently enjoyed an eight-game winning streak but have gone 2-2 SU (1-3 ATS) in the four games since. The Thunder posted a 124-102 win as 9-point faves at the Denver Nuggets Tuesday night, but have gone just 1-4 SU in their last five games with no days off in between games.

Huge Matchup as Red Wings Host Flyers

Philadelphia Flyers Detroit Red Wings NHL

Three teams remain in the hunt for the final two playoff spots in the Eastern Conference and two of them square off when the Detroit Red Wings host the Philadelphia Flyers Wednesday evening.

Shark Bites
  • The total has gone OVER in five of the Red Wings’ last seven versus the Eastern Conference.
  • The Flyers are 8-0 SU in their last eight games after a loss.
  • The Red Wings are 0-3 SU in their last three games after consecutive wins.

The Red Wings are presently priced at -125 in moneyline markets at online book Bovada while the visiting Flyers are -105. The total is tabbed at 5 goals with OVER -135 and UNDER +105.

One of the Red Wings and Boston Bruins will be going to the postseason as the third-placed team in the Atlantic Division and right now, the Wings are in the driver’s seat. Somewhat. The two are even on 91 points, but the Wings have a game in hand, which will be this meeting with the Flyers.

The Flyers have four games remaining and are also on 91 points attempting to grab the final wild card spot. They are coming off a 6-2 defeat courtesy the Pittsburgh Penguins, a loss which snapped a three-game winning streak.

Detroit enters Wednesday’s meeting with back-to-back wins and have won three of their last four. Philadelphia, however, has had the edge in head-to-head meetings with Detroit winning both games by scores of 2-1 and 4-3.

Jays Look To Continue Pounding Rays

The Toronto Blue Jays have relished in their opportunities when facing the Tampa Bay Rays, as the Blue Birds are 7-3 in their past 10 games against their AL East rivals. The Jays have averaged five runs per game in those 10 games with six outings seeing them notching five or more runs.

Toronto is welcoming J.A. Happ back to their rotation after he spent 2015 split between Seattle and Pittsburgh. The Blue Jays are hoping to see the same types of performances from Happ that he had with the Pirates, as the lefty went 7-2 with a 1.85 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP in 11 starts for the Bucs to close the season.

The Rays will start Matt Moore who struggled last season after returning from Tommy John surgery with a 5.43 ERA and a 1.54 WHIP in 12 appearances. If Tampa wants to pick up another win over the Jays they will likely need their offense to score more than the three runs they scored in each of their first three games against their AL East adversary.
