Surging Rangers Host Hawks Wednesday

Patrick Kane Chicago Blackhawks Henrik Lundqvist New York Rangers NHL

The New York Rangers basically have no chance of catching the Washington Capitals in the Metropolitan Division, but if they continue to play as hot as they’ve played in February, they’ll certainly be a team to look out for come playoff time.

Shark Bites
  • The Blackhawks are 8-3 in their last 11 games versus the Eastern Conference.
  • The Rangers are 4-12 SU in their last 16 games after a win.
  • OVER has cashed in nine of the Rangers’ last 11 games versus the Western Conference.

At online book Bovada, both the Blackhawks and Rangers are priced at -115 in moneyline markets. As far as the total is concerned, OVER 5 goals is -125 while UNDER 5 goals is -105.

The Rangers have gone 5-2 SU in the month of February and are coming off a 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers in their last contest. Netminder Henrik Lundqvist has stopped 146 of 155 shots faced and has one shutout en route to a 5-1 record in six February starts.

The Blackhawks have been somewhat tepid (by their standards) in the month, winning their first three games and then losing three-straight before crushing the Toronto Maple Leafs 7-2 in their last game Monday.

The Hawks have been getting hot on the road as they bring a three-game road win streak into Madison Square Garden Wednesday night. They’ll be eager to get that Central Division lead back but when Henrik Lundqvist is on his game, he is a tough goalie to beat.

Canadiens Hope to End Road Trip With Win

Ben Scrivens Montreal Canadiens NHL

The Montreal Canadiens finish up a small three-game road trip in Colorado Wednesday night and will be eager to post the first victory in their travels against an Avalanche club that has struggled since returning from the All-Star break.

Shark Bites
  • The Canadiens are 0-7 in their last seven games versus the Central Division.
  • Canadiens are 2-6 in their last eight games versus the Avalanche in Colorado.
  • OVER is 10-1-2 in the Canadiens last 13 games.

At online shop Bovada, the Habs are EVEN while the Avs are -130 in moneyline markets. As for the total, OVER 5.5 goals is presently -105 while UNDER 5.5 goals is -125.

The Habs had actually won three-straight games before embarking on their recent roadie that has seen them lose 6-4 at the Buffalo Sabres before losing 6-2 at the Arizona Coyotes Monday night.

Ben Scrivens is reportedly set to get the start in Denver after Mike Condon allowed six goals on 27 shots versus the Coyotes. Scrivens started for Montreal at the Sabres but was pulled after allowing three goals on just eight shots.

The Avs dropped four-straight after the break but managed to win back-to-back games before losing 4-1 at the Sabres Sunday. Colorado sits eighth in the Western Conference playoff picture, just four points up on the Arizona Coyotes.

It’s been well documented how poorly Montreal has played since its hot start to the campaign, but a record of just 1-10 in its last 11 contests versus teams from the Western Conference does not bode well for the struggling Habs Wednesday evening.

Duke has had the Edge Over UNC Recently

North Carolina vs Duke

One of the greatest rivalries in sports takes center stage tonight when North Carolina and Duke square off at the Dean Smith Center in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels opened as 6.5-point favorites, but it’s the visitor that’s had the edge in this matchup, as the travelling team is 7-2 ATS in the last nine games between the two squads.

North Carolina is an absolute beast at home, with 17 straight wins on their home court this season, but are a below average bet in Chapel Hill, going just 7-8-2 ATS at home. They’re also on a bit of a slide at the betting window, posting a 2-6 ATS record over their last eight games.

Duke has gotten the better of their rival lately, winning five of the last six games over North Carolina, and covering the spread in four of their last five trips to UNC. This will be just the third time this season that Duke enters a game as an underdog — a situation they haven’t responded well to on the season with an 0-2 SU and ATS record.

The total for this one opened at 162.5 and both teams are trending UNDER. The Tar Heels have gone UNDER in seven of their last eight, and Duke has gone UNDER in four of their last five games. However, the teams have gone OVER in three straight matchups against each other.

There is a new favorite atop the college basketball futures board as the North Carolina Tar Heels sit as +800 favorites taking over the title from the Oklahoma Sooners.

While the Sooners lost to the Kansas Jayhawks Saturday, UNC thumped Pitt 85-64 over the weekend but their biggest contest of the season is on deck as the Duke Blue Devils come to town Wednesday evening.

Baylor is a Team to Stay Away From

The Baylor Bears will try to put an end to a major slide that’s seen them go 1-6-1 ATS over their last eight games when the host the Iowa State Cyclones tonight. Iowa State, meanwhile, has put together a respectable 6-3 ATS record over the last nine, and are also 6-3 ATS on the road this season.

Baylor has also failed to cover in five straight home games, but they’re likely happy to see an Iowa State team that they’ve beat in eight of the last nine games at home. Baylor opened as 3.5-point favorites for the game, which is also a situation they’ve struggled in as they’re an awful 0-5-1 ATS in their last six games as favorites.

Iowa State was the host the last time the teams met on January 9 — a 94-89 Bears win as 7-point underdogs. The game also went OVER, marking three straight contests to go OVER the total between the teams and eight of 10 overall.

Texas is a Hot Bet vs West Virginia

WVU vs Texas

Two top 25 teams highlight Tuesday night’s college hoops schedule when the Texas Longhorns host the West Virginia Mountaineers, and both teams are on a role at the betting window. Texas has covered the spread in seven of their last eight games, while West Virginia is 8-3 ATS over their last 11 games.

The Longhorns got the better of the Mountaineers when the teams last met on January 20, winning 56-49 as 12-point underdogs. West Virginia dominated the battle on the glass, recording 49 rebounds to Texas’ 33, but were ultimately done in by poor 3-point shooting (3 for 21) and abysmal free throw shooting (8 for 23). The win added to trend that’s seen Texas cover six out of their last seven games over WVU, and win seven out of 10 against them straight up.

Texas has been hot at home, winning six straight games SU and covering the spread in three straight on their home court. They are, however, coming off of two straight losses on the road to Oklahoma and Iowa State. They opened as 2.5-point favorites for tonight’s game, but despite their mini run at home, and are a lackluster 5-6 as home favorites this season.

Texas has also been a hot UNDER play at home recently, going UNDER in six of their last eight home games. Tonight’s game opened with a total of 137.5, a total these teams haven’t surpassed in their last four games against each other.

Inconsistent Kings Visit Caps Tuesday

Los Angeles Kings Alex Ovechkin Washington Capitals

Don’t look now, but some inconsistent play over the past month has the Los Angeles Kings’ lead in the Pacific Division shrinking on a daily basis. The prospect of extending that lead will get tough as the club continues its road trip at the Washington Capitals Tuesday evening.

Shark Bites
  • The Kings are 0-5 in their last five games playing on one days’ rest.
  • UNDER is 5-2 in the last seven meetings between the Kings and Captials.
  • The Kings are 9-4 in their last 13 road games.

The Kings suddenly have just a five-point lead over the Anaheim Ducks in the Pacific Division and have rotated wins and losses over the last nine games. They are in the midst of a seven-game road trip which has seen them go 2-2, including a 1-0 loss at the New Jersey Devils Sunday.

Netminder Jonathan Quick has missed the last three games due to a lower-body injury but, according to Lisa Dillman of the Los Angeles Times, he is in line to return to the crease tonight. Jhonas Enroth and Peter Budaj have taken turns in the blue paint for L.A. with the latter backstopping the team to a 5-4 win over the New York Rangers on Friday.

The Capitals lead the NHL with a whopping 84 points but are coming off a 4-3 loss to the Dallas Stars Saturday. That loss snapped a five-game win streak so the Caps will look to start another one against a club that has performed very well versus them. The Kings have gone 8-1 in the last nine meetings with the Caps, which includes splitting both meetings in February of last season.

At this point of the season, this could very well be a preview of the Stanley Cup Final but the Kings better better start stringing wins together before other teams in the Pacific catch up.
