Warriors Have the Blazers on the Ropes

Stephen Curry CJ McCollum

The Portland Trail Blazers’ odds to win their second-round series with the Golden State Warriors were stacked against them even without Stephen Curry in the fold, but now that the sharpshooter is back it may take a miracle for them to overcome the 3-1 series deficit they’re facing. Game 5 gets underway in California tonight.

Shark Bites
  • The total has gone OVER in five of the Warriors' last seven games with one day off between games.
  • The Warriors are 7-0 SU and ATS in their last seven games at home.
  • The Trail Blazers are 7-3 SU in their last 10 games with one day off between games.

Curry returned in Game 4 and didn’t miss a beat, erupting for a game-high 40 points including an NBA-record 17 in overtime to rally the Dubs to a 132-125 victory. Portland led 16-2 before Curry entered with six minutes remaining in the first quarter and led 71-59 in the third before Golden State mounted their comeback.

Only nine teams in NBA history have ever overcome a 3-1 deficit to win a series, but Houston did so against the L.A. Clippers in last year’s West semifinals. The Blazers also won four straight against the Clips in the opening round after dropping the first two.

When Portland is coming off a loss, the UNDER is trending. The Trail Blazers have gone UNDER in seven of their last eight after a loss.

Raptors Rarely Lose Two Straight

Dwyane Wade Kyle Lowry

At this point in the NBA postseason, it’s hard to tell which Toronto Raptors team you’re going to see when they take the floor. But as the series with Miami shifts back north of the border, trends are working in Toronto’s favor. The Raptors are 8-0 SU in their last eight games after a loss.

Shark Bites
  • The total has gone UNDER in nine of the Heat' last 12 games after a win.
  • The Raptors are 1-7 ATS in their last eight games.
  • The total has gone UNDER in eight of the Raptors' last 11 games with one day off between games.

Injuries to star big men Jonas Valanciunas and Hassan Whiteside have given this series a different look. Valanciunas has been ruled out for the remainder of the series with an ankle injury, while Whiteside is day-to-day with a sprained ligament in his right knee. Head head coach Erik Spoelstra has announced the center will not play in Game 5.

If the Raps are going to win tonight, they’ll need far better production from their backcourt. Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan were a combined 6 of 28 from the floor in Game 4 and totalled 19 points, with Lowry going 0 for 6 from downtown. DeRozan has shot 33 percent in the postseason, and Lowry is at 33 percent.

Miami has opened as 4.5-point underdogs for the affair, but they’ve been far from a safe play in this spot. The Heat are 3-9 Su in their last 12 games as dogs and 2-8 SU and 3-7 ATS in their previous 10 when labeled as pups.

Resorts World Las Vegas Update

Resorts World Vegas

The biggest unfinished casino project on the north end of the Las Vegas Strip is back on track to be completed by early 2019, as Resorts World Las Vegas will start construction up again in the last three months of this year. The $4 billion Chinese-themed hotel-casino resort broke ground in 2015 with hopes of opening in 2018 near the location of the old Stardust before construction halted due to economic struggles abroad.

ChiSox Making Easy Work of Rangers

The American League leading Chicago White Sox have faced little problem when taking on the Texas Rangers, as the ChiSox have taken the past six meetings between the two clubs. Those six games have seen the White Sox outscore the Rangers 27-12 with Texas plating more than three runs just once.

Chicago will send youngster Carlos Rodon to the mound in the hopes he can rectify his recent struggles Tuesday. Rodon is 0-3 with a 6.30 ERA in his past four starts, which all started when he was lit up for five runs and pulled after just one out against the LA Angels.

Derek Holland takes the bump Tuesday coming off one of the worst outings in recent memory. The lefty allowed 11 hits, 11 earned runs while walking three and was pulled after 2.2 innings against the Toronto Blue Jays in his last start.

Spurs Have a Habit of Bouncing Back

Russell Westbrook Tim Duncan

Many pundits around the NBA have labeled Oklahoma City’s playoff run as a vital one due to the looming free agency of Kevin Durant. OKC showed they weren’t dead yet in their Game 4 victory over the Spurs, as Durant finished with 41 points en route to a pivotal 111-97 result to knot the series at two.

Shark Bites
  • The Spurs are 3-1 ATS in their last four games at home.
  • The visiting team is 2-6 SU in its last eight games in this matchup.
  • The Thunder are 8-2 SU in their last 10 games on Tuesday.

The good news for Spurs backers is they have a penchant for bouncing back. In San Antonio’s last 16 games after a loss, they’ve gone 14-2 SU. The Thunder, who opened as 7-point underdogs, have not been reliable in this spot. Russell Westbrook and company is 1-11 SU and 1-10-1 ATS in their last 12 when tabbed as underdogs of seven points or less.

A big reason for the Spurs’ recent slide has resulted from some major stagnation in ball movement. San Antonio had an incredible 39 assists in a Game 1 rout, but have collected 19 assists in Games 2 and 3 and 12 in the Game 4 setback.

UNDER bettors would be wise to consider the total in this game, which opened at 199.5. The UNDER is 4-1 in the Spurs’ last five with a closing total of 199.5 or more.

Mets Getting It Done As Faves

The New York Mets have been cruising along this season to the second best record in the National League while rarely being upset. The Mets are 12-4 SU in their past 16 games as favorites and will be in that same spot when they continue their series with the Los Angeles Dodgers Tuesday.

One of the reasons the Mets will be favored at Dodgers Stadium is Jacob deGrom. However, despite his clear talent – the 27-year old has a 1.99 ERA this season – he has never recorded a win against the Dodgers. In three career starts against the Dodgers deGrom is 0-2 with a 3.66 ERA, which includes one appearance at Dodgers Stadium.

Alex Wood struggled with home runs in his last outing, an anomaly for the groundball pitcher. The Dodgers’ lefty surrendered three home runs in his last start, which is something he had never done before in his career.

No Place Like Home for Penguins

Washington Capitals Pittsburgh Penguins NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs

Up 3-2 in their Eastern Conference semifinal series versus the Washington Capitals, the Pittsburgh Penguins will attempt to close things out in Game 6 on home ice Tuesday night. Home ice has been a safe haven for the Pens and their backers during the postseason and they’ll look for one more victory to set up a date with the Tampa Bay Lightning in the conference final.

Shark Bites
  • The Capitals are 0-3 SU in their last three games in Pittsburgh.
  • The Capitals are 0-12 SU in their last 12 games on the road in May.
  • The Penguins are 14-0 SU in their last 14 games after a loss.

Online sportsbook Bovada is presently offering the Penguins at -135 in moneyline markets while the Capitals are presently +115. As far as the total is concerned, OVER 5 goals is -120 while UNDER 5 goals is EVEN.

The Penguins have been fantastic on home ice in the postseason, going 4-1 SU in the five games played at the Consol Energy Center thus far. The only setback was a 4-2 loss in Game 2 of their opening round series versus the New York Rangers, which happened to be Jeff Zatkoff’s last start in this playoff run before making way for Matt Murray.

Going back to the conclusion of the regular season, the Pens have actually gone 7-1 SU in their previous eight games on home ice.

The Caps stayed alive with a 3-1 victory on home ice in Game 5 thanks to two-point nights from both Alex Ovechkin and T.J. Oshie. Defenseman Brooks Orpik returns to the lineup for the Capitals Tuesday night after serving his three-game suspension for an illegal hit on Olli Maatta.

Despite being up 3-2, surely the Pens would love a bit more offense from Sidney Crosby. The captain has just two assists in the series and has only managed 11 shots on Caps’ netminder Braden Holtby.
