Heat Posting Ugly Numbers vs Spurs

Chris Bosh Tony Parker

The San Antonio Spurs open their eight-game road trip on Tuesday against a team they’ve historically dominated: the Miami Heat. Tim Duncan and company are a phenomenal 5-0 SU and ATS in their last five against the Heat.

Shark Bites
  • The Spurs are 9-1 SU in their last 10 games against the Eastern Conference.
  • The Heat are 2-5 SU and ATS in their last seven games with one day off between games.
  • The total has gone OVER in five of the Spurs' last six games on the road.

The Spurs haven’t lost at home yet this season (28-0 SU) but have gone a solid 15-8 on the road. San Antonio ranks in second in the Western Conference and has garnered victories in 18 of their last 20 games, including a surprising 106-102 nail biter to the lowly Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday.

Miami continues to be a fantastic play for UNDER bettors due to its penchant for participating in a lot of low-scoring games. The OVER/UNDER has gone 17-34 so far for the Heat, while also cashing in four of their previous five tilts heading into this one.

SB 50 Breaks Record for Biggest Handle

Manning super bowl

Sportsbooks across the betting industry are reporting that Super Bowl 50 was their biggest Super Bowl ever and Nevada sports books took in a record handle of $132,545,587 according to Nevada Gaming Control.

The books collected a hold of 10.1 percent for $13.3 million, which marks the third biggest hold percentage in the last 11 years. The other two best years for the books over that span also came in Peyton Manning Super Bowls (2014 and 2007).

Coldplay Causes Headaches for Books

Coldplay Super Bowl

Super Bowl 50 was a success for the sportsbooks by most accounts. There was big handle and at least a small profit for the House.

But there was one prop that went, um, slightly out of tune.

“Coldplay’s first song was a bit of a mess,” said Dave Mason, the point man at BetOnline. “Was kind of unclear whether Yellow or Viva La Vida was technically the first song.”

Sound silly? I had to re-watch the video three times on YouTube to make out what lead singer Chris Martin had sung in his first couple of lines. And I still wasn’t totally sure which song should win.

Kings and Cavs are Trending UNDER

DeMarcus Cousins Kyrie Irving

The Cleveland Cavaliers-Sacramento Kings series isn’t a premiere NBA matchup, however totals bettors have been getting rewarded when the two sides collide. In the last eight meetings between the squads, the UNDER is a solid 6-2. They’ll renew acquaintances Monday in Ohio.

Shark Bites
  • The total has gone OVER in the Cavaliers' last four games after a win.
  • The Kings are 5-1 SU in their last six games against the Central Division.
  • The favored team is 4-11 ATS in its last 15 games in this matchup.

The Kings are a team in turmoil right now, which is nothing new for the downtrodden franchise. Sacramento has lost seven of its last eight, which has effectively caused the seat under head coach George Karl to warm up. DeMarcus Cousins and company have allowed an awful 128 points in each of its last two setbacks.

Cleveland is still struggling to adjust to newly appointed bench boss Tyronne Lue’s system and is clearly experiencing some growing pains, but it’s important for the wine and gold to get that out of the way well ahead of the playoffs. The wine and gold may be a rocky play over the course of the next month or so, so bettors should approach this volatile team with caution.

Fade Faves Between OU and Texas?

Taking the plunge and backing the favorite between the Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns has been a terrible idea for bettors in recent memory, as the faves are just 1-6 ATS in the past seven matchups between the two teams. To make matters worse for OU backers, the Sooners are just 7-9 ATS when giving up points this season. Texas will travel to Norman, Oklahoma Monday to take on their Big 12 rivals.

Oklahoma had their worst outing of the season in their past game when they lost to unranked Kansas State. The Sooners scored just 69 points, their second fewest this year, while hitting a season-low 25 percent from beyond the arc. Despite a poor team performance, Buddy Hield put up respectable numbers with the senior scoring 23 points in the affair.

Texas has earned a reputation as giant killers this season as the Longhorns are 4-2 SU and 5-1 ATS in their six games against ranked opponents. Isaiah Taylor has been a key piece in running Shaka Smart’s offensive scheme as the guard has averaged 15.3 points and 5.1 assists per game this season.

Red-Hot Ducks Begin Road Trip at Pens

Sidney Crosby Pittburgh Penguins Anaheim Ducks NHL

Losers of nine of their first 10 games the season, the Anaheim Ducks began the campaign in uncharacteristically poor fashion and many left them for dead. That start seems ages ago, however, as the surging Ducks bring the league’s longest winning streak into Monday’s date with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Shark Bites
  • The Penguins are 1-4 SU in their last five games against the Western Conference.
  • OVER is 4-0-1 in the Ducks’ last five games and 5-1-1 in the Penguins last seven games.
  • The Ducks are 10-2 SU in their last 12 games versus teams from the Western Conference.

The Ducks are currently riding a six-game winning streak and are steadily climbing the Pacific Division standings heading into the new week. The aforementioned slow start put them in a deep hole, but the Ducks are currently third in the division, just one point back of the San Jose Sharks and eight back of the Los Angeles Kings.

Pittsburgh, and more specifically Sidney Crosby, has started to round into form as well. The Pens are currently eighth in the division but have gone 6-2-2 in their last 10 games and were enjoying a four-game winning streak before losing 6-3 to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday. Crosby has tallied eight points (five goals, three assists) in three February games alone and is currently tied with Evgeni Malkin for the team in points (49). Malkin, who has missed the previous two games with a lower-body injury, is still listed as day-to-day.

Monday begins a stiff test for the Ducks as they embark on a seven game road trip that starts in Pennsylvania (at Pittsburgh, at Philadelphia) and will take them to Columbus, Chicago, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver. For a team that is currently sub-.500 away from home, this could be a trip that makes or breaks the Ducks’ postseason aspirations.

Duke Failing To Cover Within Conference

There has been more than one reason why Duke has not been as dominant this season as usual, but their play within the ACC is a big piece of the puzzle. The Blue Devils are 6-4 SU within the conference this season and have been worse for bettors as they are 2-5 ATS in the past seven ACC games. Duke will try to climb back into the Top 25 when they host the Louisville Cardinals Monday.

In case you haven’t heard, Louisville is in all sorts of trouble. The Cardinals banned themselves from postseason play while the NCAA investigates the allegations concerning Rick Pinito and the hiring of escorts for recruitment. Louisville will be hoping to see Damion Lee back in the lineup Monday as the senior missed the team’s last game due to a bruised knee.

Grayson Allen has taken exception to Duke being dropped from the Top 25 for the first time since 2007, as the sophomore has averaged 27.5 points while shooting 53.6 percent from the floor in the past two games. The Blue Devils are 0-2 SU and ATS this season when facing ranked teams while being outscored by 11 points in each game.

Wings in Revenge Spot Versus Panthers

Detroit Red Wings Florida Panthers NHL

The Detroit Red Wings will have revenge on their minds when they tangle with the Florida Panthers at Joe Louis Arena Monday night. The Wings were beaten soundly by a score of 6-3 when the two Atlantic Division teams met in Sunrise last week.

Shark Bites
  • The Panthers are 5-0 SU in their last five games versus Red Wings in Detroit.
  • The Red Wings are 0-4 SU in their last four games after a win.
  • The Panthers are 12-5 SU in their last 17 road games.

The Wings, currently -115 at online shop Bovada, are in danger of falling out of the Eastern Conference playoff spots and one area they’ll have to improve on down the stretch is their performance on home ice. They have an opportunity to build some momentum at Joe Louis Arena after defeating the New York Islanders 5-1 in their last effort, but are still a paltry 1-5 in their last six home games.

The Panthers continue to be one of hockey’s better stories and sit second in the Eastern Conference and first in the Atlantic Division. A 12-game winning streak that bridged December and January catapulted them up the standings and despite losing to the Pittsburgh Penguins in their last effort, they’ve still won five of their last six games and own a six-point lead over the Tampa Bay Lightning in the division.

Florida has dominated Atlantic Division foes of late, taking a 7-1 SU mark in their last eight contests versus the division but the Wings will be desperate to pick up a big division win on home ice Monday night.

Clippers Own Series With 76ers

Chris Paul Jahlil Okafor

The Philadelphia 76ers have spent the better part of the last three seasons being doormats for the rest of the NBA, and the Los Angeles Clippers are especially enjoying seeing Philly on the schedule. The Clips are a perfect 8-0 SU and ATS in their last eight matchups with the Sixers. They can make that nine in a row with a win on Monday in the City of Brotherly Love.

Shark Bites
  • The total has gone OVER in 17 of the 76ers' last 24 games as home underdogs.
  • The Clippers are 5-0 ATS in their last five games when favored by 9.5 or less.
  • The total has gone UNDER in eight of the Clippers' last 10 games with no days off between games.

L.A.'s last four wins over the lowly 76ers came by margins of 45, 36, 31 and 21 points. Sportsbooks opened the Clippers as 9-point road favorites for the affair.

Philadelphia ended a four-game skid on Saturday with a win over fellow Eastern Conference cellar dweller Brooklyn to increase its win total to eight. While the Sixers are still one of the worst teams in the league, the pre-Christmas addition of point guard Ish Smith has transformed the look of this team. Before the acquisition of the speedy Smith, Philly was an awful 1-30 SU.

The Sixers have been a solid play at home as of late, with the squad covering the spread in six of its previous eight tilts in front of their hometown fans.
