NBA Focus: When to Bet the Lakers

Kobe Bryant

It’s been a year of transition for the Los Angeles Lakers as they’ve basically gone from being the laughingstock of the NBA to a somewhat sympathetic club as Kobe Bryant conducts his farewell tour. At dead last in the Western Conference the only positive direction this team is going in is to the top of the NBA Draft, but if you’ve been paying attention, the team has been quite profitable for bettors lately.

Why Aren't More People Betting on Hillary?

OK, so Hillary Clinton is -1000 to win the Democratic nomination for President and -8000 to win the South Carolina primary.

But the price gets a whole lot more tempting with Presidential election odds, where Clinton is set as low as even money. That's a 100 percent return on your wager if she wins.

Flames Heating Up for OVER Bettors

Jonas Hiller Calgary Flames NHL

The struggling Calgary Flames do not provide bettors any consistent value in moneyline markets, but they have been on a tear for OVER bettors in recent contests. OVER backers will look for that to continue when the Flames head to STAPLES Center and visit the Los Angeles Kings Tuesday night.

Shark Bites
  • The Kings are 1-5 SU in their last six games as favorites.
  • The Kings are 7-2 SU in the last nine games against the division.
  • UNDER has cashed in four of the last five meetings between the Kings and Flames.

OVER tickets have cashed in four-consecutive Flames games heading into Tuesday night’s contest versus the Kings courtesy a whopping eight goals per game on average over that span. The Flames have been on the wrong end of the scoreboard in three of those four games, as opponents have lit the lamp 18 times.

The Kings finally snapped a three-game losing streak with a 2-1 overtime victory over the Nashville Predators Saturday night. While Calgary has been a hot OVER wager, the Kings have been equally reliable for UNDER bettors. A complete lack of goalscoring has helped the UNDER cash in four-straight Kings' games as L.A. has managed just four goals in the previous four contests.

With both the Anaheim Ducks and San Jose Sharks making a serious push toward the top spot in the Pacific Division, the Kings need to start stringing some wins together and keep their spot on the throne.

Jayhawks Decimating Rival Bears

The Kansas Jayhawks hold a 1.5-game lead in the Big 12 and will look to claim at-least a tie for the Big 12 regular season crown for the 12th consecutive season. To ensure they maintain a healthy lead heading into the final stretch of action, Kansas will need to get passed the ranked Baylor Bears Tuesday. This has been a task that the Jayhawks have been up to with the team going a perfect 6-0 SU and ATS in the past six meetings between the two teams.

Kansas enters Tuesday’s action on a seven-game winning streak, with six of those coming within the Big 12. Those six conference games have seen the Jayhawks win by an average of 14.5 points while shooting 51 percent.

Baylor comes into the game on an impressive two-game winning streak despite Rico Gathers playing a combined 15 minutes in those games due to the flu. Jonathan Motley stepped up big in Gathers absence, with the sophomore averaging 25.5 points and seven rebounds in those games.

Pelicans-Wiz are a Red-Hot UNDER Play

Tuesday’s slate of NBA action isn’t what you’d call must-see TV, however totals bettors will want to pay attention to the New Orleans Pelicans-Washington Wizards matchup. In the last 11 meetings between the clubs, the UNDER is a red-hot 9-2. Sportsbooks opened the tilt with a relatively high total of 213.

Shark Bites
  • The Pelicans are 3-1 ATS in their last four games when tabbed as an underdog of 4.5 or less.
  • The Wizards are 5-2 ATS in their last seven games.
  • The total has gone OVER in the Wizards' last four games with two days off between games.

The Wizards (25-29 SU) have looked like a different team after the All-Star break, but still have plenty of work to do if they want to rebound from what was a disastrous first half of the season. John Wall and company have been particularly better at home, garnering victories in their prior three home games while shooting 49.2 percent from the field and limiting opponents to 41.9 shooting with an average of 89.7 points per game.

New Orleans (22-33 SU) sits 11th in the Western Conference and 5.5 games out of the eighth and final playoff spot and will need to make a serious run to even think about making the playoffs.

Ravaged by injuries from the start of the campaign, the Pels haven’t been able to put a consistent product on the floor but are coming off a franchise-record 59 points and 20 rebounds by Anthony Davis in Sunday’s 111-106 victory over Detroit.

Should Bettors Be Wary of the Rockets?

Houston Rockets Dwight Howard

With the Utah Jazz and Houston Rockets set to do battle at Vivint Smart Home Arena on Tuesday, a pair of contrasting betting trends are at play. The Jazz, who opened as 5-point chalk at most books, are 6-2 ATS in their last eight when favored by five points or more. The Rockets are much poorer when in this spot, as James Harden and company are a measly 1-4 ATS in their previous five when tabbed as underdogs of five or more.

Shark Bites
  • The Rockets are 1-7-1 ATS in their last nine games against the Western Northwest Division.
  • The total has gone OVER in five of the Jazz's last six games after losing the previous game in a matchup.
  • The Rockets are 5-2 ATS in their last seven games against the Jazz.

The Rockets (28-28 SU) have been one of the biggest disappointments in the Association this season and are far from a cohesive unit at this point. Houston interim head coach J.B. Bickerstaff went as far as calling the Rockets a “broken team” just a few weeks ago, and in the wake of yesterday’s trade failure fiasco, they shouldn’t inspire much confidence in their bettors.

Houston tried to ship Donatas Motiejunas and Marcus Thornton to Detroit at the trade deadline last week, but the deal fell through due to the Pistons’ concerns over the long-term health of Motiejunas. Combine that with the fact that the Rockets were openly shopping Patrick Beverly, Dwight Howard and Ty Lawson, it’s quite clear the locker room is far from stable at this point.

The Jazz are currently half a game behind Houston for the final playoff spot in the West, which means tonight’s contest has big postseason implications. Utah has enjoyed playing in Salt Lake City as of late, evidenced by the squad winning its last six home games.
