It's Not Always Sunny in Philadelphia

The City of Brotherly Love has been anything but friendly to the Philadelphia Phillies lately.

Citizens Bank Park was once perceived as a hitters’ paradise after it opened in 2004, but the venue has been downright mean to the Phillies in 2016. Prior to Monday’s contest with the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Phils were averaging just 2.7 runs per game at home.

Phillies' Bats are Ice-Cold at Home

The Philadelphia Phillies just can’t seem to get anything going offensively at home, but they’ll be looking to heat up their bats against the Arizona Diamondbacks in the City of Brotherly Love on Monday.

Shark Bites
  • The Phillies are 0-5 SU in their last 5 games after a loss.
  • The Diamondbacks are 3-0 SU in their last 3 games with a closing total of 9.0 or less
  • The Phillies are 0-6 SU in their last 6 games at home.

Philly, the majors’ lowest-scoring team, is averaging just 2.7 runs at Citizens Bank Park so far this year. The Phils are averaging just 1.8 runs during their six-game losing streak, and the D-Backs sent them to their 23rd defeat in their last 29 games with Sunday’s victory.

Shelby Miller and Jeremy Hellickson are slated to get the ball for the Diamondbacks and Phillies, respectively. Miller (1-6, 7.09 ERA) returns to the mound for the first time since May 24 after going on a rehab stint in the minor leagues, while Hellickson (4-5, 4.46) hasn’t won a game since May 24. Hellickson is 0-3 with a 5.23 ERA in his last five outings.

Afternoon baseball hasn’t been the Phillies’ forte as of late. In Philadelphia’s last last six afternoon games, they’re a brutal 0-6.

Strasburg Huge Underdog vs Kershaw

Stephen Strasburg and Clayton Kershaw will toe the rubber tonight in one of the best pitching matchups of the year as the Nationals open up a series in LA. Money has been pouring in on the NL East-leading Nationals even though they are facing the most dominant pitcher in baseball.

Stephen Strasburg is 1-7 in his last 8 games as an underdog.
The favored team is 9-2 in its last 11 games in this matchup.
The Dodgers are 9-0 in their last 9 games with Kershaw as their starting pitcher.

Clayton Kershaw (10-1, 1.58) has been borderline unhittable this year, as batters are averaging .170 against the lefty. He will look to disappoint Washington backers who are taking advantage of the Nat’s +165 Bovada moneyline. The Dodgers will try to peg Strasburg with his first loss of the season and will head into this game as -190 favorites.

Strasburg (10-0, 2.90 ERA) has been red-hot this season, justifying the biggest extension ever given to a pitcher who has had Tommy John surgery. The Nats’ co-ace has never been bigger than a +118 underdog in his career.

The total has gone OVER in Strasburg’s last 11 starts and with a measly total of 5.5 a bet on the OVER may be profitable.

Prince Fielder is 4-for-8 with a home run in his career vs Gausman.

Mark Trumbo has a .311 average and five home runs in 45 at-bats vs Holland

The Orioles are 4-0 SU in their last four games after losing the previous game in a matchup.

Kevin Gausman will bring an ugly 4.78 road ERA to the mound for the Orioles, and hopes to rebound from his last start where he allowed six earned runs in three innings pitched at Fenway Park. Rangers’ hitters have had success vs Gausman in the past, cobining to hit .305 in 59 combined at-bats.

The Rangers will counter with Derek Holland, who’s allowed nine earned runs and four home runs over his last two starts. Those starts came on the road, but Holland has been a different guy at home, posting a 3-1 record and 3.33 ERA in five home starts. With the exception of Mark Trumbo, Orioles hitters haven’t had a whole lot of success vs Holland, combining to hit .213 in 136 combined at-bats.

The Rangers enter the game as +103 underdogs. They’ve gone 6-0 in their last six games as underdogs.

Lackey is Lights Out at Wrigley Field

Two veteran pitchers will match up in a Monday night rivalry game between the St. Louis Cardinals (Jaime Garcia) and the Chicago Cubs (John Lackey). The Cubs are currently the overwhelming World Series favorites and will look to take advantage of a Cardinals team that has dropped five straight games.

The total has gone UNDER in 12 of the Cubs' last 14 games at home.
The Cubs are 21-6 against teams in the NL Central this season.
In 19.2 innings pitched in June, John Lackey has allowed a total of 2 runs.

The 37-year-old John Lackey (7-2, 2.66 ERA) will be taking on his former team for the third time this season tonight. Lackey is 1-0 in his first two starts against the Cards, allowing a total of three runs over 14 innings. The crafty vet has been stingy at Wrigley Field this year, posting an ERA of 1.66 over six starts at home.

Although they’ve dropped their last five games, the Cardinals have won five straight away from home and will send Jaime Garcia (4-6, 3.93 ERA) to the bump in search of their sixth straight road victory. Garcia has struggled mightily this month, posting an ERA of 5.63 over three starts.

The Redbirds have been slotted as +150 underdogs on Bovada while the Cubs will be -170 favorites as they go for their fourth straight win.
