Arrieta Untouchable On The Road

Jake Arrieta is really good at pitching – which we already knew – but he has been ridiculous on the road this season. Arrieta is a perfect 5-0 with a 0.97 ERA and a 0.67 WHIP in his five starts while travelling this season. The current NL CY Young leader takes to the mound when the Chicago Cubs finish up their series with the St Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium Wednesday.

The Cardinals will send Carlos Martinez to the mound with the righty looking to end his struggles this month. Martinez went 4-0 with a 1.93 ERA in his four starts in Aprils, but has since faltered to a 0-4 record and a 5.85 ERA in May.

One batter that has relished his opportunities against Martinez is Anthony Rizzo. The big leftie is 4-for-15 with two home runs, six RBIs and two walks in his career against Martinez.

Matz Has Been Lights Out On The Road

The New York Mets will send leftie Steven Matz to the mound when they close out their series with the Washington Nationals Wednesday. Matz has been flawless throughout his young career when travelling, as he is 5-0 with a 2.18 ERA in seven career starts on the road – including 3-0 with a 1.86 ERA this season.

Matz is also perfect this season when pitching in day games – though the sample size is relatively small. Matz has allowed just two hits and no runs while pitching 14.2 innings this season when taking the bump in the daytime.

The Nats will counter with Tanner Roark who has been hot and cold this season. In Roark’s three wins this season he has posted a ridiculous 0.44 ERA, but he has a 8.40 ERA in his three losses.

Cavaliers Must Regain Their Scoring Touch

DeMar DeRozan Kyrie Irving Toronto Raptors Cleveland Cavaliers

When the Cleveland Cavaliers first travelled north of the border, they had a 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference finals and were brimming with confidence. Thanks to a pair of impressive showings from the Toronto Raptors, things are tied up at two as the series shifts back to Northeast Ohio. Game 5 is set for Wednesday.

Shark Bites
  • The Raptors are 0-4 SU in their last four games on the road against the Cavaliers.
  • The Cavaliers are 5-0 SU in their last five games after consecutive losses.
  • The total has gone UNDER in five of the Cavaliers' last six games with a closing total of 199.0 or more.

“They flipped the script on us,” Cavs coach Tyronn Lue told reporters after his team’s 105-99 loss in Game 4. That may be a bit of an understatement. The wine and gold were unable to contain Toronto’s all-star guard pairing of Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan, while Bismack Biyombo – one of the biggest surprises of the 2016 NBA playoffs – dominated them on the glass time and time again.

LeBron James maximized his minutes in Game 4, scoring 29 points on 11-of-16 shooting with nine boards and six assists. “The King” attempted just one shot in the final five minutes of the game as his team relinquished the lead.

After going 1-for-9 in Game 3, sweet-shooting power forward Kevin Love went 4-of-14 in Game 4. Lue opted to play reserve Channing Frye in Love’s place for the fourth quarter.

The Raptors have been failing to cover as huge underdogs, going 1-4 ATS in their last five as dogs of 10.5 or more. On the flip side, the Cavs are 3-0 ATS in their previous three as favorites of 10.5 or more.

OVERS Cashing When Wilson Starts

Tyler Wilson will make his 11th start of his young career for the Baltimore Orioles when they take on the Houston Astros Wednesday, which – if history continues – could mean the OVER is worth a look. The OVER is 8-2 in Wilson’s 10 career starts thus far with the righty posting a 4.36 ERA in those outings.

The ‘Stros will send Collin McHugh to the mound in the hopes that the pitcher can stop surrendering so much contact. McHugh has given up 63 hits through his first nine starts – the fifth most of any AL pitcher this season.

Some of the Orioles best hitters have been struggling recently with both Manny Machado and Mark Trumbo faltering at the plate. Machado is just 5-for-37 with 13 strikeouts in the past 10 games while Trumbo has reached base just once in the past three games – a walk on May 21.

Blues Have Been Great as Road Dogs

After combining for 18 goals in the last two games, the Blues and Sharks will hit the ice tonight in San Jose with the Sharks looking to book their ticket to the Stanley Cup Final. A win would mark the first ever conference championship for the long time underachieving Sharks who’ve won six division championships but have no playoff success to show for it.

The story of this series has been inconsistency. Over the last four games there’s been two shut outs, and two games where a team scored six goals. San Jose opened the day as a -159 home favorite, which is a spot they’ve performed well in during the playoffs, posting a 6-2 record. One of those losses was in the last game to St. Louis, however, as they were lit up in a 6-3 loss.

The Blues have actually fared extremely well as road underdogs, going 10-3 in their last 13 games in that spot. This includes winning three of their last four as road dogs in the playoffs where they outscored the opposition 14-10.

Brian Elliott will get the nod in net for the Blues after Jake Allen allowed four goals on 25 shots in Monday’s loss. Elliott started the first three games of the series where he allowed seven goals on 69 shots. After recording shutouts in Game 2 and 3, Martin Jones will be tasked with keeping the door shut for the Sharks.

Can Toronto Complete the Comeback?

Toronto Raptors Bismack Biyombo

Let’s be honest: the NBA has never led the charge in the parity department. The “Get into the playoffs and anything can happen” mentality just hasn’t seemed to translate to professional hoops, as superstar-laden teams tend to dominate year in and year out.

Except for the 2016 postseason, that is.
