2016 Summer Olympics: Soccer Odds

Brazil is just two years removed as hosts of the 2014 FIFA World Cup and set to yet again host a major international soccer tournament. Although teams are restricted to sending only three players who are over the age of 23, there should still be plenty of star power with the likes of Neymar, Mario Gotze and Sergio Aguero all expected to suit up for their countries.

Reds and Giants Have a Penchant for Going OVER

The San Francisco Giants have been slumping since the All-Star break, but a series with the lowly Cincinnati Reds could be just what the doctor ordered to get them back on track.

Shark Bites
  • The Reds are 2-7 SU in their last nine games against the Giants.
  • The total has gone UNDER in eight of the Giants' last 10 games.
  • The Reds are 2-7 SU in their last nine games after winning the previous game in a matchup.

Anthony DeSciafani and Jake Peavy are the probable starters. DeSciafani (5-0, 2.50 ERA) has posted six straight quality starts while lasting eight innings in two of them. The 26-year-old has not walked a batter in his last three outings.

Peavy (5-8, 5.15) was pounded for a season-high seven earned runs in a loss at Cincinnati on May 4, but the veteran is still 7-1 with a 2.92 ERA in his career against the Reds.

OVER bettors love seeing these teams collide. In the last nine matchups between the squads, the OVER is 8-1.

High-Flying Cubs Host Turbulent White Sox in Windy City Clash

Two teams that are trending in opposite directions are set to square off on Monday when the Chicago Cubs tangle with the White Sox in a Windy City showdown at U.S. Cellular Field.

Shark Bites
  • The total has gone UNDER in four of the White Sox' last five games with a closing total of 8.5 or less.
  • The total has gone UNDER in five of the Cubs' last six games with a closing total of 8.5 or less.
  • The White Sox are 5-2 SU in their last seven games against teams with winning records.

Jake Arrieta and Miguel Gonzalez are slated to take the bump. Arrieta (12-4, 2.60 ERA) is 3-1 with a 3.82 ERA in six career starts against the White Sox, including a pair of victories last season. Gonzalez (2-5, 4.41) has posted four straight quality starts yet owns just one win over his last seven outings.

Home field advantage has been non-existent in this series. In the last 11 meetings between the White Sox and Cubbies, visiting teams are 8-3.

Pomeranz Gets Second Chance at Fenway After Rough First Outing

The Tigers and the Red Sox will begin a series in Fenway tonight with Detroit looking to climb back into the Wild Card race. Justin Verlander (9-6, 3.71 ERA) will take the rock for the 51-48 Tigers to face Drew Pomeranz (8-7, 2.83 ERA) and the 55-41 AL Wild Card-leading BoSox.

SHARK BITES
The total has gone UNDER in 5 of the Tigers' last 6 games on the road against the Red Sox.
The Tigers are 1-4 in their last 5 games as a moneyline underdog of 130 or less.
The Red Sox are 2-7 in their last 9 games as a moneyline favorite of -150 or less.

Pomeranz got welcomed to Fenway in style in his first start with the Red Sox. He got lit up for eight hits and five runs and lasted only three innings against San Fran in an 11-7 Boston win. The lefty will get his second chance to make a good impression tonight in first ever start against the Tigers.

Verlander has been solid since the stinker he posted against the Indians on June 26 and in his last two starts he has pitched a combined 15 innings and allowed only three runs on six hits. In his last start at Fenway, Verlander pitched eight innings of one-run baseball. He has, however, not faced Boston yet this season and the Tigers have lost four of the last five games Verlander has started. The visiting Detroit Tigers hope for a solid performance on Monday as they look to pick up a win at Fenway Park against the Boston Red Sox.

Drew Pomeranz gets the call for the Boston Red Sox and he will try to build on a 8-7 mark. In the other dugout, Justin Verlander brings a 9-6 ledger to the game for the Detroit Tigers as he tries to quiet the Red Sox bats.

Syndergaard Hopes to Silence Red Hot on the Road Cards

Noah Syndergaard Mets

The Cardinals and Mets open up a three-game set in the Big Apple tonight with both teams in the hunt for a Wild Card spot. The Cards appear to be offering good value as +140 underdogs as they’ve been hot on the road recently, winning 12 of their last 16 games outside of St. Louis, but Mets’ starter Noah Syndergaard likely doesn’t care as he’s done his best work at Citi Field this season.

Thor has recorded a win in three of his last four home starts and enters tonight’s game with a 2.30 home ERA. He has a little bit of experience vs St. Louis batters and has had his way with them, limiting them to a .125 batting average in 24 combined at-bats.

Carlos Martinez, who’s quietly having a strong season himself, takes the hill for the Cards and will be attempting to record his third straight win. Martinez has been elite on the road this season, posting a 5-1 record with a 1.71 ERA, holding batters to a .190 batting average.

Totals bettors will be interested to know that these teams have gone UNDER in 13 of their last 16 games against each other, and St. Louis has gone UNDER in six of Martinez’s last seven starts. Oddsmakers are expecting a low scoring game as the total is set at 6.5 runs.

Camden Yards has Been Home Sweet Home for Orioles

Two of the best slugging teams in the Majors will kick off an interleague series tonight as the Rockies invade Camden Yards to take on the Baltimore Orioles. Yovani Gallardo (3-2, 5.69 ERA) will take the mound for the O’s to take on Jorge De La Rosa (6-7, 6.07 ERA).

SHARK BITES
The Rockies are 3-7 in their last 10 games on the road.
The Orioles are 11-3 in their last 14 games against teams with losing records.
The total has gone UNDER in the Orioles' last 12 games.

The Orioles, with a 36-14 record at Camden Yards, have the best home record in all of baseball and will try to extend their lead in the AL East as they play a Rockies team that has been struggling on the road.

Gallardo has also been pretty good at home, posting a 2-0 record and a 3.54 ERA in four home starts. If the O’s want the win tonight, they will need to give their starter some decent run support as he has given up at least two runs in every game he’s toed the rubber this year.

De La Rosa is coming off a brutal start at home in which he allowed seven earned runs on 11 hits. Jorge can’t blame Coors for his bloated ERA this year – he has also been brutal on the road, posting a 6.50 ERA in seven starts away from home.

Dodgers Far From A Sure Thing At Busch Stadium

Though they picked up a win against in St. Louis Saturday, that was certainly the outlier for a Los Angeles Dodgers team that has lost 10 of their past 13 games at Busch Stadium. The series rubber match between the Dodgers and Cardinals will take place Sunday night.

SHARK BITES
  • Mike Mayers is just the sixth pitcher to get the start for the Cardinals this season.
  • The OVER 5-1 in the Dodgers’ past six games.
  • The Cardinals are 7-16 against the runline in their past 23 games at home.

Scott Kazmir is coming off one of his best outings of the season in which he threw seven innings of one-run ball against the Washington Nationals Tuesday. The veteran left-hander has been having his best month of the season, as he has a 2.25 ERA while registering 23 strikeouts and just three walks in July.

Mike Mayers will get the spot start for the Cardinals, which will be his major league debut. The right-hander has posted a solid 2.52 ERA in 18 starts split between Double-A and Triple-A this season.
