Yankees Try Once Again for Playoff Berth

The New York Yankees will have an opportunity to book their ticket to the postseason Thursday but will have to get by their bitter rivals, the Boston Red Sox, first.

Shark Bites
  • CC Sabathia has allowed just two earned runs or fewer in six out of his last eight starts.
  • Prior to this season, Rich Hill had not started an MLB game since he was with the Orioles in 2009.
  • The Yankees are 2-6 in their last eight games against left-handers.

The Yanks missed out on winning the division after the Toronto Blue Jays claimed the AL East title Wednesday, making their wild card aspirations all that more crucial.

Don’t expect the BoSox to lie down, however. Boston has won six-straight against the Bronx Bombers and can effectively finish off a sweep of the three game series in front of the New York faithful.

New York sends veteran CC Sabathia to the bump for the tilt, while Boston is expected to counter with Rich Hill. The journeyman Hill has been impressive for the Sox down the stretch, tallying at least 10 strikeouts in each of his first three starts with the club – good enough for a team record.

NFL Week 4 OddsShark Computer Picks

The Chicago Bears seem to be selling off assets already this season with the trades of Jared Allen and Jon Bostic this week. Despite the Bears going 0-3 SU and ATS this season, the OddsShark Super Computer is predicting a 21.2-19.4 win for the Windy City when they host the Oakland Raiders Sunday.

Blue Jays Can Clinch AL East With Win

Wednesday marks a potentially massive day on the sporting calendar for fans of Canada's lone MLB team, as the Toronto Blue Jays can clinch their first AL East division title since 1993 with a victory over the Baltimore Orioles in Maryland.

Shark Bites
  • The Orioles are 1-7 in Gonzalez's last eight starts.
  • Russell Martin is hitting .255 with three home runs and 45 RBIs in 45 career games vs. Baltimore.
  • Injured Blue Jays SS Troy Tulowitzki is expected to return to the lineup within the next few days.

In the first game of a doubleheader the Bluebirds are slated to send young gun Marcus Stroman (3-0, 1.89 ERA) to the mound, while the Orioles are scheduled to counter with Miguel Gonzalez (9-11, 4.85 ERA). A win guarantees the Jays home-field advantage in the AL Divisional Series.

Toronto's magic number now sits at just one in the wake of New York's 10-4 loss to the Boston Red Sox Tuesday evening. Thanks to inclement weather in the Baltimore area, Tuesday's scheduled game will be made up today.

R.A. Dickey (11-11, 4.00 ERA) and Kevin Gausman (3-7, 4.49 ERA) are the probable starters for Toronto and Baltimore in the second tilt of the day.

Reds Have Lost 10 Consecutive Games

The Cincinnati Reds have lost their past 10 games and will look to avoid their longest losing streak in 17 years when they host the Chicago Cubs Wednesday.

The Reds past 10 games have been embarrassing for Cincy fans as the team has lost by more than two runs eight times. The average scoring margin through this Reds’ slump is -4.5 runs per game.

The Cubs will be starting Jon Lester while they try to catch the Pittsburgh Pirates for the top NL Wild Card spot. Lester has faced the Reds three times this season and has posted a 4.74 ERA, which is his highest against any team he has faced three or more times this season.

Cardinals 3-0 Against Pirates With Wacha

Michael Wacha will likely be making his last start of the regular season when the St. Louis Cardinals continue their series against the Pittsburgh Pirates Wednesday afternoon. In the three games Wacha has started against the Bucs this season, the Cards are a perfect 3-0.

With a win the Cardinals clinch the NL Central for their third consecutive season. The Pirates will need to figure out Wacha who has posted a 1.93 ERA while only allowing four earned runs in 18.2 innings against Pittsburgh this season.

The Pirates will counter with Gerrit Cole who has yet to face the Cardinals season. Cole has cooled off in the second half of the season posting a 5-5 record with a 3.01 ERA after the All-Star Break.

The two teams were supposed to meet on Tuesday, but after the game got rained out a doubleheader was scheduled for Wednesday.

SN: NFL Week 4 Betting Trends Analysis

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are home for the first time since opening week hosting Carolina.

But that's not necessarily good news for the Bucs - and it's not because the Panthers are unbeaten. The Buccaneers are 15-36-1 (29 percent) against the spread (ATS) during their last 52 home games.

Tampa Bay lost all eight of its matchups at Raymond James Stadium last season covering only twice. The Buccaneers were smashed by Tennessee opening week, 42-14.

NFL: History is Working Against Ravens

In the NFL, starting the regular season with back to back losses is a tough hole to climb out. But according to recent history, dropping three-straight out of the gate can be nearly impossible to rebound from.

Since 1990, only three teams have seen the postseason after starting 0-3 ('92 Chargers, '95 Lions and '98 Bills). Clubs that have begun their respective seasons dropping three in a row have missed the playoffs 82 straight times since the Doug Flutie-led Bills did so in 1998.
