Rio 2016: Men's Basketball Odds

And then there were four.

The 2016 Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics have given sports fans plenty of reasons to cheer, but one of the highlights is still hanging in the balance. Men’s basketball is down to just four teams, with the United States, Australia, Spain and Serbia remaining to fight it out for international hoops glory.

Unsurprisingly, the Americans remain frontrunners for the gold medal. The United States, who are -1000 favorites at Bovada, finally found their groove in the quarterfinals in the form of a 105-78 decisive victory over Argentina. Strangely enough, team U.S.A. was -2000 to go all the way before the contest.

Australia (+1400), Spain (+1200) and Serbia (+1800) rank well behind the dominant Americans. With Spain set to tangle with the United States in the semis, a wager on Australia or Serbia looks like the safer bet if you think a massive upset is in the works.

The Australians are the definition of an underdog story. Before the tournament began, the Boomers were +15000 long shots, listed ahead of only China, Venezuela and Nigeria. Andrew Bogut and company developed fantastic chemistry early on, and even gave the U.S.A. a run for its money in the round robin.

Thursday is an off day on the hardwood, as both semifinal matchups will take place at Carioca Arena on Friday.

The men’s basketball round robin may be over at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, but sportsbooks aren’t changing their tune when it comes to which country has the best chance to win the gold medal.

At Bovada, the United States remain massive -2000 favorites to go all the way in Brazil. Spain (+1400), Australia (+2000), Serbia (+2200), Lithuania (+2500), France (+2800), Croatia (+3300) and Argentina (+4000) all have huge upset value.

If you asked me before the tournament, I would have told you the Americans were shoo-ins to win gold. But things did not come easily for team U.S.A. in the early going, as close wins over Australia, Serbia and France proved to be a taller task than many pundits imagined.

Any team that boasts the firepower the Americans possess will always be the favorite, but taking a shot on another club seems appetizing considering the prices. If the U.S.A. can get by Argentina, they will play the winner of France and Spain in the semifinals.

That means Australia, Lithuania, Croatia and Serbia won’t have to face the dominant Yankees in the semis. If you like any of those teams, bet them now before those odds worsen.

Tuesday is a rest day for men’s Olympic hoops, but quarterfinal action gets underway on Wednesday with four games on tap.

Spain (+1400), France (+2200), Lithuania (+2500), Australia (+2800), Argentina (+2800) and Serbia (+2800) are behind the Americans at the shop. It would be a major shock if any one of these countries toppled U.S.A., but it happened in 2004 when Argentina won the gold.

Team U.S.A. hammered China 119-62 in its round-robin opener and dispatched Venezuela 113-69 on Monday to improve to 2-0. Spain suffered a surprising setback to Croatia in its opening game and is scheduled to take on the host Brazilians on Tuesday.

The U.S.A. has won a record 14 gold medals in basketball at the Olympics, so it’s no surprise to see them as such heavy chalk. While some of the nation's top hoopers chose to stay back in North America, the Americans still have the most talent in the tournament.

It's worth noting that Canada, Italy and Greece did not qualify for the 2016 Olympics but are on the list regardless.
