Rio 2016: OVER/UNDER Medal Counts

Carmelo Anthony

The 2016 Summer Olympic Games are right around the corner, and oddsmakers are gearing up for the biggest sporting spectacle in the world just like the rest of us.

BetOnline has released props on total medal counts and gold medals for six countries. The United States is favored to take home the most medals, as the book has tabbed the powerhouse with an OVER/UNDER of 103.5. The O/U for Canada, which is more of a Winter Olympic nation, is 17.5.

As far as gold medals go the U.S.A. leads the pack at 41.5, with China (34.5), Great Britain (18.5) and Germany (15.5) also available to wager on.

The Olympics have been overshadowed due to the Zika virus epidemic. The virus, which is spread through mosquito bites, saw its initial outbreak happen in Brazil. In February, the World Health Organization declared it a public health emergency of international concern.

As a result, a ton of athletes have decided to skip the Olympics over Zika fears, with golfers Rory McIlroy and Jason Day becoming the latest to pass on their invitations. With so many people opting to forgo competing, the UNDER will be tempting for sports bettors.

The 2016 Summer Olympic Games get underway in Rio de Janeiro on August 5.
