Rio 2016: United States vs. Serbia Men's Basketball Gold-Medal Game Preview

After a gruelling few weeks, the men’s basketball portion of the 2016 Olympic Games will end on Sunday when the United States takes on Serbia in the gold-medal game.

Shark Bites
  • Kevin Durant (17.9) leads the Americans in points per game.
  • Milos Teodosic led Serbia in the semifinals with 22 points.
  • Nikola Jokic tops the Serbs in rebounds per game (6.3).

The U.S. advanced to its third straight final on Friday, beating Spain 82-76. The Americans were inconsistent for much of the round robin but have pieced it together in the medal stage. Sportsbooks have set the U.S.A. as 15-point favorites with a total of 181.5.

Win or lose, Serbia will be going home happy. The country has never won a medal in men’s basketball, and they impressed the world despite possessing only one NBA player (Nikola Jokic). Serbia held Australia to an amazing 14 points in the first half Friday’s semifinal matchup, going on to hammer the Boomers 87-61.

The United States was just good enough against Spain, but their 82-point output was the lowest in a game since the 2004 Olympic semifinals when they managed 81 in a shocking loss to Argentina. Serbia is no joke, so don’t be surprised if they too give the talented Americans a run for their money.

Miroslav Raduljica could be the difference-maker for the Serbs. Raduljica is averaging 15.9 points in the tournament while shooting a sizzling 62.3 percent from the field.
