Saints favored in Monday Night Football odds

Even though it is still pretty early in the season, both teams really need to win this game. Last week the Vikings lost to the Tennessee Titans 30-17, who covered the 3 point spread, while the Saints got back to .500 by beating the San Francisco 49’ers 31-17 and covered the 4.5 spread.

Minnesota Vikings at New Orleans Saints -3.5 O/U 47

This is a game that features two of the most exciting RB’s in the Saints Reggie Bush and the Vikings Adrian Peterson. Bush is better passing catches out the backfield, as he leads the Saints in receptions and receiving yards. Peterson ranks second in the NFL in rushing yards (420).

The Vikings have opened up their offense since QB Gus Gus Frerotte was named the starter, which does not bode well for the Saints who rank 27th in the NFL on defense and are especially weak against the pass.

The Vikings have the 6th ranked D and they will have their hands full against Drew Brees and the Saints offense, which ranks 3rd in the league.

This year, the Vikings are 1-3 against the spread and the Saints are 3-1. The Vikings have not been a good bet lately, as they are 1-6 in their last 7 games ATS. Not that the Saints are that much better, especially at home, where they are 7-16-1 ATS in their last 24 home games. The Saints have had no problem scoring at home, as in their last 7 home games the teams have gone Over.

Odds Blogger Pick: The key to this game will be which team can stop the other’s running game. The Saints have an advantage in this game, as they have a better passing attack. Saints QB Drew Brees (1,343 yds 8 TD 4 INT) is playing great this year and the Vikings D has to get to him and hope to contain Bush to have any chance in this game.

Those are tall orders AND the Saints are at home. Look for Peterson to have a good game, but he cannot do it all. The Saints have too much firepower on offense so they are a good pick to win and cover the spread. Even though the Vikings do have the 6th ranked defense in the league they are not strong against the pass, so this game may become a shootout.

Because of this the Over is a good pick as well.
