Montreal Still Bringing up the Rear in MLS Futures Odds

Major League Soccer has worked hard to legitimize itself among the soccer powerhouses of the world but it’s things like painting the wrong lines on your field of play that will very quickly undo all that effort.

That’s exactly what happened in the first leg of Montreal and Toronto’s conference championship that was actually a really good game that resulted in a 3-2 win for the Impact. Despite that victory, Montreal still has the longest odds to win the MLS Cup at online shop Bovada.

Nothing is set in stone, however, and those two away goals Toronto FC scored are huge in an aggregate series. A 1-0 result next week would put Toronto in the final to meet the winner of the Western Conference championship between Colorado and Seattle.

All four teams remaining in competition for the MLS Cup had odds of +1200 or bigger before the season kicked off and Colorado, now the +225 odds-on favorites, started the year as a +8000 long shot.

If you took a chance on the Rapids before the opening whistle, you are likely their biggest fan right now and may be a little stressed, given their 2-1 loss in the first leg of their aggregate series with the Seattle Sounders.

Here's the complete list of odds heading into the second leg of conference championship play:

Odds as of November 23 at Bovada

  • Colorado Rapids +225
  • Toronto FC +250
  • Seattle Sounders +250
  • Montreal Impact +350

The Lions have begun the season with a pair of draws and a pair of wins as they enter Friday’s contest versus the Philadelphia Union atop the Eastern Conference with eight points. They smashed the Portland Timbers 4-1 in their last contest thanks to a great performance from Kaka, who chipped in with a goals and two assists.

The LA Galaxy are still faves as they entered the season at +450 and have been slightly adjusted to +400. Sporting Kansas City, who sits second in the Western Conference with nine points from its first four games, has moved from +1600 to +900.

The latest batch of European stars crossing the pond and heading to the LA Galaxy include Ashley Cole and Nigel de Jong. The two players join the likes of Robbie Keane, Steven Gerrard and Giovani dos Santos on a stacked Galaxy squad and that talent has the club at the top of the MLS Futures board with the beginning of the 2016 campaign upon us.

The Galaxy head into the new season as slight favorites ahead of the New York Red Bulls as of Friday, March 4. The Galaxy are priced at +450 on the futures board at online shop Bet365 with the Red Bulls at +500.

The Red Bulls boast talented goalscorers like Bradley Wright-Phillips and Lloyd Sam and finished atop the Eastern Conference with 60 points (seven up on the Columbus Crew) and led the entire MLS with a +19 goal differential (six up on FC Dallas) last season.

On the other side of the country, the Galaxy finished fifth in the Western Conference with 51 points and were eliminated by the Seattle Sounders in the knockout round.

Toronto FC and the incredible Sebastian Giovinco, fresh off their first playoff appearance in franchise history, come in at +2000 but it’s the Vancouver Whitecaps who are the top-rated Canadian club at +1400. The Whitecaps were eliminated in the Conference Semifinal round by last season’s eventual champion, the Portland Timbers.

The Timbers, coming off their first MLS Cup victory, are third on the futures board at +750 and will look to be the fourth franchise in MLS history (D.C. United, Houston Dynamo, LA Galaxy) to win back-to-back MLS Cups.
