Belgium Face Tough Test Versus Ireland

Kevin De Bruyne Belgium Shane Long Ireland Euro 2016

Many expected Belgium to be a candidate to win Euro 2016 outright but they will have no chance of doing so if they continue to play the way they did against Italy in their opener. Belgium will look to step up their game and put one in the win column when they face Ireland in Bordeaux Saturday.

SHARK BITES
  • Ireland has three draws and one defeat in its last four games.
  • Ireland hasn’t beaten Belgium since 1966 (two losses, four draws).
  • Belgium’s Kevin De Bruyne passed the ball at a rate of just 69 percent versus Italy.

At online shop Bovada Belgium is presently -125 while Ireland is +390 and the Draw is +245 in moneyline markets. When it comes to spread betting, Belgium is a 1-goal favorite at +150 while Ireland is -185. Finally, as far as the total is concerned, OVER 2 goals is -140 while UNDER 2 goals is +115.

Belgium was beaten 2-0 by Italy despite controlling most of the in-game statistical categories. Because of the letdown from Belgium in the opener, manager Marc Wilmots could make some changes for what amounts to essentially a must-win game for the Red Devils.

Ireland has one point after a 1-1 draw with Sweden in their opener. Wes Hoolahan scored for the Irish in the 48’ minute but an own goal in the 71’ was Ireland’s undoing. Still, a draw is a great starting point from Ireland and this side has the grit and determination to further frustrate a rattled Belgian team.

Ireland is a hefty underdog here but has the attacking prowess to make things interesting. There could be some sneaky value with the Irish in this one.
