Can England Join the Rest of Euro Giants in Quarters?

Daniel Sturridge England Euro 2016

The biggest teams in European football have already advanced to the next round of Euro 2016 and England will hope to join them. To do so, they’ll have to defeat Iceland as the pair meet in Nice Monday. The English can expect to see a lot of the ball against Iceland, whether or not they can find the back of the net remains the major concern.

SHARK BITES
  • England has four wins and two draws in their last six matches.
  • Iceland has scored eight goals in their last four matches.
  • England won 6-1 in the only other meeting between these two teams (2004).

England is the favorite at -225 at online shop Bovada while Iceland comes in at +800 and the Draw is +300. As far as the spread is concerned, England is a 1-goal favorite at -125 while Iceland comes in at +105 as the underdog. Finally, in totals markets, OVER 2 goals is -145 while UNDER 2 is currently +120.

England has looked far from the dominant side that breezed through qualifying as a draw with Slovakia meant they finished behind Wales in Group B. The Three Lions won all 10 of their qualifiers and many had them pegged for a deep run in France. They can certainly still do so, but they have yet to hit their stride in the tournament.

England has scored just three goals and was held scoreless in the draw with Slovakia. Luckily, the defending has been decent for the most part and the side has conceded just a pair of goals.

Iceland will no doubt defend, defend, defend as that has been their modus operandi all tournament. They have averaged just 34.3 percent possession (second-lowest at Euro 2016) and recorded the lowest possession at a euro game since 1980 without losing when they kept the ball just 27.8 percent of the time against Portugal.
