Spain Begin Their Defense Against Czechs

Four years ago, Spain achieved something remarkable. After winning their second Euro Championships in 2008 “La Roja” went from strength to strength, winning their first ever World Cup in 2010 and then capping off a wonderful period by winning Euro 2012 in devastating fashion. Czech Republic will be their first obstacle this year.

Shark Bites
  • Spain have won their last eight competitive matches in a row.
  • Czech Republic - Then Czechoslovakia - won the competition in 1976.
  • Czech Republic has qualified for every Euro Championship since becoming an independent nation in 1994.

In the Group D opener, a Spain victory has a price of -200 on Bovada and a Czech win of +600. In the case of a tie, you’d be looking at +320. Looking at the spread, Spain is at -1 (-125) and Czech Republic at +1 (EVEN).

Despite Spain being favourites, the Czech Republic have reason for optimism given their excellent qualifying campaign in a difficult group. They’ll be hoping for a change of fortunes against the Spaniards, as they haven’t enjoyed a win against them since 1990.

However, Spain have seemingly suffered a drop in form since being crowned European Champions in 2012 and no longer have that aura of invincibility. So called smaller nations no longer fear them and that makes for a better match-up.

A few players to look out for in this match are Isco and Álvaro Morato for Spain (making their debuts at the Euros) and Tomas Necid for the Czechs.
