Desperate Teams Meet in POR-AUT Clash

Cristiano Ronaldo Portugal Euro 2016

The two teams favored to win Group F before Euro 2016 started now meet following disappointing openers in what could prove to be the most important matchup in the group. Portugal, left frustrated by Iceland in their first game, battle Austria, who lost their opener after a near-perfect qualifying campaign.

SHARK BITES
  • Austria has lost their last two games by 2-0 scorelines.
  • Portugal has three wins, one loss and one draw in its last five matches.
  • These teams have not met since 1995 in what was a 1-1 draw.

Portugal is currently being offered at -120 in moneyline markets at online shop Bovada while Austria is +330 and the Draw is +230. In spread betting, Portugal is a 1-goal favorite priced at +185 while Austria is -230 as the dog. As far as the total is concerned, OVER 2 goals is -135 while UNDER 2 goals is +110.

Portugal, and especially Cristiano Ronaldo, was left stunned as Birkir Bjarnason equalized in the 50th minute of their opening round fixture, cementing a 1-1 draw and producing harsh criticism from the Portuguese super star.

Portugal dominated every facet of the game - 26 shots to four; 70.5 percent of the ball; 11 corners to two; 13 dispossessions to four - but it was not enough as Iceland continued its storybook Euro campaign with a positive result against a heavy fave.

Austria was dynamite in qualifying - winning nine games and drawing one – but slipped on a banana peel in the form of Hungary in their opener. Goals from Ádám Szalai and Zoltán Stieber ensured a win in their opener and put the pressure on these two teams.

The Austrians got here with tidy defending and disciplined play up and down the pitch, but that was missing from their game. Aleksandar Dragovic was sent off after picking up a second yellow in the 66’ so this could make way for Tottenham Hotspur CB Kevin Wimmer to take his spot.
