Manchester City is already dealing with a minor injury to leading scorer Carlos Tevez, but now it has been announced that DF Micah Richards will miss the FA Cup semifinal against Manchester United due to a hamstring injury.
This is really bad news for the Man City defense since defenders Kolo Toure is suspended after a positive doping test and Pablo Zabaleta gone from the team due to compassionate leave. A thin defense is the last thing that Manchester City needs facing a Man U squad that has scored the most goals in the England Premier League this season.
Richards sustained the injury when he was playing in an England Under 21 match in a 4-0 win over Denmark. His injury is somewhat severe and he is expected to be out for 4-6 weeks. Richards recently stated when he was told how long he would be out that, "It is not what I wanted to hear. I felt sick when I was told.”
He then said, "of all the games to miss, a Wembley date with United is the last one any player would choose.”
Before the severity of the injury was reported Richards said that he would be using an oxygen tent to get ready for the big Derby FA Cup semis match, but since it is a Grade 2 tear that will not help.
On top of everything Man City may also be without DF Jerome Boateng, as the club will seed a 2nd opinion in whether he will be needing knee surgery. Boateng’s injury is much like the one FW Mario Balotelli had and the striker did not need surgery and Man City hopes they will get the same news.
With all of these injury concerns it seems like a final appearance, which would be Man City’s first since 1981, seems unlikely.
