USMNT Looks for Redemption Against the Reggae Boyz in Gold Cup Final

With one more Gold Cup win, the Reggae Boyz will close their storybook run at this competition with a trophy and a third straight upset. They’ll come into the final of the biennial CONCACAF tournament as enormous underdogs against a U.S. Men’s National Team that has lost to Jamaica just twice in 24 matches since 1988.

SHARK BITES
  • Jamaica is ranked No. 76 in the world, the USMNT is ranked 35th.
  • Jamaica beat Mexico despite being out-possessed 69-31.
  • Jamaica has allowed fewer goals than the USMNT at this Gold Cup (2-3).

That last loss, though, just so happened to come at the 2015 Gold Cup when the Yanks dropped a 2-1 result to Jamaica in the semifinals. The Jamaicans would go on to be dominated by Mexico in the final but that should only add to their motivation for Wednesday’s marquee match.

If you think the underdog story continues and the Jamaicans summon their inner bobsleigh team, you can bet on them to beat the Americans in regular time at a price of +650. Not a bad little wager when you consider how Jamaica has been playing. They may not have had the luxury of calling up reinforcements like the USMNT did but they might just have the hottest goalie in the world right now in Andre Blake.

Allowing just two goals in five games at the Gold Cup, Blake has been unbelievable. If he can keep his team in the game, it’s more than possible that Jamaica sneaks a goal or two against an incredibly leaky American backline.

On paper, though, the U.S. has the far superior squad and anything other than outright victory will be a massive disappointment for a result-driven Bruce Arena side that will strap on the boots as the massive -215 moneyline favorite. Jozy Altidore, Clint Dempsey and Michael Bradley give the Americans more than enough firepower to capture the gold but soccer is a funny game and I’ve got a weird feeling about this match.

They play the 90 for a reason and if you’re an unbiased observer, +650 on the Reggae Boyz will give you some serious skin in the game.

If you’re in the camp that thinks the Americans roll, though, you’ll want to take a look at the -1 spread for the U.S. that’s being offered at -110.
