Argentina has won both of their Group B matches beating Nigeria 1-0 and South Korea 4-1. Greece lost their first group match to South Korea 2-0 and then beat Nigeria in their last match 2-1.
Greece did not start off their last match well giving up an early goal in the 16th minute to Nigeria to fall behind 1-0. However, they got a little lucky, as Nigerian defender Kaita was given an immediate red card after a little kick to a Greek striker after an altercation. Greece took over the match after that with a one-man advantage, but they can’t count on that happening against Argentina.
Argentina’s offense came alive and scored four goals in their win over North Korea after only mustering one goal against Nigeria.
Argentine striker Gonzalo Higuain scored the first hat-trick in the World Cup since 2002 and the Greek defense has to key on him, Carlos Tavez, and Lionel Messi. The Greeks are known for their defense, but have to push up on offense and take advantage of the counter-attack opportunities they get since they need to win this match.
The Greek strikers of Angelos Charistaes, Georgios Samaras, and Theofanis Gekas have to pressure the Argentina defense. Greece also cannot allow Argentina to dominate the time of possession and that responsibility falls upon their midfielders.
If Argentina scores early they may rest some of their key players since they have already qualified for the playoffs.
If Argentina plays like they did in their narrow 1-0 opening match against Nigeria then the Greeks have a chance, but if they play like they did in their 4-1 thrashing of South Korea they do not.
Look for Argentina to play a little more defensively than they usually do, but with the talent they have up front they will score and win this match and in the process win Group B.
