Italy-Spain Clash in Rematch of 2012 Euro Final

Italy and Spain are set to face off in a rematch of the 2012 Euro final in what is, by far, the best match of the round of 16. It won’t get any easier after this for either of these teams – the winner will have to face Germany in the quarterfinals.

SHARK BITES
  • Spain is looking to become the first team to win the Euros three times in a row.
  • Italy has not won the European Championship since 1968.
  • These teams played to a 1-1 draw in their last meeting earlier this year.

Since 2011, Spain has only lost once in six matches to Italy and is currently favored at +115 at online shop Bovada to move through the Italians in regular time. Spain saw their unbeaten record in 2016 Euro group play evaporate after the since-eliminated Croatians scored a late go-ahead goal to take their match and Group D from the Spaniards.

After winning Group E after only their second game, Italy made large-scale changes to their roster in their somewhat meaningless game against Ireland. The experimenting showed the Italians are probably better off going with their A squad against the heavyweight Spanish team in a match they have been pegged as +285 underdogs.

Spain thoroughly routed the Italians 4-0 in the 2012 Euro final. Look for this match to remain much closer in a battle between two extremely tactical teams.
