Spain Captures First World Cup Title
In the World Cup final between Spain and Holland, Spain’s Andres Iniesta scored the only goal in the match in the 109th minute after a scoreless draw after regulation time to give Spain the title.
Even though Iniesta scored the match winner G Iker Casillas was THE man for Spain making a brilliant foot save on a Arjen Robben breakaway in the 62nd minute and then thwarted another Robben attack barely beating him to the ball deep in the box.
The match was a very defensive one with few chances from both teams and it was not pretty with 14 yellow cards, which doubled the previous high in the finals.
Spain only scored eight goals in the World Cup, which is the fewest goals scored by any champion. Even though their offense got all the press before the World Cup it was their defense that won the title for them, as they only conceded two goals all tournament.
In an interesting fact New Zealand was the only team in the entire World Cup that did not lose a match. The Kiwis played to three draws in group play and did not advance to the knockout stage.
Diego Forlan of Uruguay won the Golden Ball as the best player in the World Cup. He scored five goals and was the main reason Uruguay was a surprise semifinalist.
FIFA named Thomas Mueller of Germany as the best young player in the tournament and he also won the Golden Boot for scoring the most goals in the World Cup. Muller along with Diego Forlan, David Villa, and Wesley Sneijder all scored five goals, but Mueller won the Golden Boot, as he also had three assists and that was the tiebreaker.
