Klopp Returns to Face Favored Dortmund

Jurgen Klopp Liverpool Europa League

We are now down to the quarterfinal round and eight clubs are left standing to battle it out for the Europa League trophy. Perhaps none of the quarterfinal matchups are as big as the Liverpool-Borussia Dortmund draw, however.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp returns to Germany to face the club he called home from 2008-2015 in the first leg on April 7. It’s his previous employer that is the favorite to win the whole thing, however. Online shop Bet365 is presently offering Dortmund at +163 while Liverpool is third on the futures board at +600.

Liverpool advanced with a 3-1 aggregate scoreline against hated-rivals Manchester United in the Round of 16. Borussia Dortmund, on the other hand, easily dispatched of Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur 5-1 on aggregate.

Klopp joined Liverpool FC on October 8, replacing Brendan Rodgers at Anfield. The Reds sit ninth in the table on 44 points and are coming off a humiliating 3-2 loss to Southampton in the Premier League. Liverpool had a 2-0 lead at Saint Mary’s Stadium but conceded at 64’, 83’ and, finally, 87’ to leave the south coast with nothing but frustration.

Klopp will have extra motivation to prove to his old club that he remains a top manager. Still, considering the way Dortmund has been flying, he has a monumental challenge on his hands.

We are down to the final 16 clubs in the Europa League campaign and action resumes Thursday. There is quality up and down the remaining teams and that is reflected in the futures board.

Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund is the favorite at +375 at online shop Bet365 but there are a number of clubs in the competition that have a realistic shot at winning.

Dortmund matches up with the Premier League’s Tottenham Hotspur (+1000) in what is easily the tournament’s marquee matchup. Dortmund and Tottenham sit second in the Budesliga and Premier League respectively and the winner of this matchup will no doubt be the favorite entering the quarterfinal round.

Defending champions Sevilla can be had at +650 and are matched up with Basel this round. The Sevillistas’ four Europa League titles are more than any other club and look to be a solid wager to make it five in 2016.

Sevilla started out poorly this year but have seen a massive turnaround in their fortunes since the end of November. They defeated Valencia in La Liga back on November 29 and have 17 wins, seven draws and just three losses in all competitions since.

Thursday marks the full return of the UEFA Europa League and with the tournament down to 32 clubs, rest assured there is plenty of value on the board in futures markets.

Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund, a Champions League runner-up in 2013, is the favorite at +650 at online shop Bet365. Die Schwarzgelben have returned to prominence domestically under new manager Thomas Tuchel. Following a down year in Germany last season, the club sits second in the table behind Bayern Munich.

Dortmund finished second in Group C with 10 points from six matches. They did lose 1-0 away to Krasnador and 1-0 at home to PAOK Thessaloniki in their final two group matches, however.

Elsewhere, Manchester United sits at +1000 despite a subpar year domestically and is the top ranking English club. The Red Devils are currently fifth in the Premier League table while manager Louis Van Gaal seems to be eternally ensconced on the hot seat. United travels to Denmark to face FC Midtjylland Thursday afternoon with Bet365 offering the English side at -133 in moneyline markets to win the first leg.

Turkish side Fenerbahce defeated Lokomotiv Mosco 2-0 Tuesday, but Thursday features a full slate of action with the reverse fixtures taking place next week. Here’s a look at the full board at Bet365.
