USA in Must-Win Match Versus Costa Rica

United States Costa Rica Copa America

Following a disappointing performance against Colombia in its Copa America opener, the United States now must generate a result versus a tough Costa Rica side in its second Group A contest Tuesday evening.

Shark Bites
  • Costa Rica is unbeaten in its last four matches (two wins, two draws).
  • Costa Rica has only conceded two goals in its last six matches.
  • USA’s last win over Costa Rica was a 1-0 triumph back on July 17, 2013.

Online shop Bovada is presently offering the UA as -135 favorites while Costa Rica is +425 and the Draw is +250. As far as the spread, the United States is a 1.5-goal favorite (-135) while Costa Rica is +1.5 (+115). Finally, in totals markets, both sides of 2 goals is -110.

It wasn’t a good start for the Americans as Cristian Zapata and James Rodriguez scored for Colombia in the Copa opener Friday night. Things won’t get any easier Tuesday as Costa Rica is a tight, defensive-oriented side that won’t give the US an inch.

In fact, Costa Rica has won the last two meetings with the US, 3-1 in a World Cup qualifier back in 2013 and, most recently, 1-0 in a friendly back in October.

The Costa Ricans are coming off a tough 0-0 draw versus Paraguay in their Copa opener and entered the tournament off of back-to-back wins in World Cup qualifying in March and May.

The Copa drought is nothing new for the Americans as they have now lost their last seven Copa matches overall.
