Will Neymar Win a Ballon d'Or While at PSG?

Completing by far the most expensive transfer in the history of world football, PSG purchased Neymar from Barcelona for $263 million and the Brazilian star is now clear to blaze his own trail as the star in the City of Light.

When talks of a potential move away from the Camp Nou arose for Neymar, rumors were heavily founded in the striker’s reported ambition to eventually win a Ballon d’Or, the trophy awarded by France Football to the player deemed to have had the best overall year for club and country.

Neymar, although he wouldn’t admit it when asked in a recent interview, felt that he’d never win the trophy in the shadow of one Lionel Messi and decided that a move to Paris would give him his best opportunity to hit his lofty target.

Now that he’s the unquestioned best footballer at his club, can Neymar really supplant Cristiano Ronaldo and the aforementioned Messi as the best footballer in the world (subjectively speaking)?

According to the odds at Sportsbook, it’s definitely possible.

No man not named Cristiano or Lionel has won the Balloon d’Or since Neymar’s countryman Kaka was given the honors back in 2007 but the prop at the sportsbook has the odds at +220 that the most expensive football player in the world will be given the award during his time with PSG.

At the age of 25, Neymar Jr. is entering his prime and he’s got plenty of football left in his magical Brazilian boots. His Argentine and Portuguese counterparts, however, are both creeping toward the twilight and it’s realistic to think that their best days are behind them.

Getting a taste of the top three in the 2015 vote, Neymar could be primed for a huge 2018, with 2017 likely already won by CR7. His debut with Paris Saint-Germain was promising and his national squad is one of the favorites heading into the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

A deep run when the world’s watching in Russia, an appearance in the 2017-18 Champions League final and a barrel of goals along the way will probably be what it takes for Neymar to grab the golden ball.

Is he up to the task?
