World Cup: Australia Preview

Australia is making their second straight World Cup appearance and third overall and while they are not in a very tough group do they have the offense to progress to the playoffs?

Australia is in Group D along with soccer power Germany, Ghana, and Serbia and the last two teams mentioned are the ones that the Aussies have a chance against.
Bovada has Serbia at +10000 to win the World Cup and at +600 to win Group D.

Australia did not play in the toughest World Cup qualifying group, but they looked good only losing once in 14 matches and only giving up four goals in the process.

In the 2006 World Cup, which was their second appearance, they progressed out of the group stage for the first time and they almost pulled off a shocker against eventual champion Italy, but committed a penalty in their box that vaulted the Italians to a victory.

One of the strengths of the Aussies is their team play, as they have almost the same squad that had a solid showing in the last World Cup. They are a fit team that can grind it out and their defense is also very solid. G Mark Schwarzer of Fulham is a rock in the goal and he may have to have a great World Cup since the Australian offense is nothing to write home about.

The weakness of Australia is their offense, as they will rely heavily on Tim Cahill of Everton for some goals. There is a lack of quality strikers after Cahill so if other defenses key on him the Aussies may be in trouble. With their lack of offense Australia will have to take advantage of counter-attack chances that they are given.

The Aussies have the defense, but their offense is a major liability and if they do not score they will not progress so they need someone to step up and tickle the back of the twine or they have no chance to get out of Group D.

Every match is important to Australia, but since they will be major underdogs against Germany their ones against Serbia and Ghana are their big ones.
