World Cup: France Preview

France was the finalist back in the 2006 World Cup, but getting back to the finals will not be easy.
France is in Group Stage A along with Mexico, Uruguay, and the host South Africa.
Bovada has France at +1600 to win the World Cup and at -125 to win Group Stage A.

The French are not in an easy Group, as Mexico and Uruguay are both ranked in the top 20 in the world in FIFA rankings and South Africa is the host and will have the home field advantage. France was simply lucky to make it to the World Cup needing a dubious non-call on an obvious handball in their last World Cup qualifying match against Ireland.

France has won the World Cup once (1998), has been the runner up once (2006), and has come in third twice (1958, 1986).

France has many world-class players that play for some of the biggest clubs in the world such as Thierry Henry, Franck Ribery, and Nicolas Anelka. These guys can provide offense and overall France has a solid offense, but they have had a tough time finding a good balance in their central defense. Ribery has battled through injuries this season and France needs him to be 100% for them to have any chance to win this World Cup.

French head coach Raymond Domenech is really on the hot seat, especially after France almost failed to qualify for the World Cup. The French had one of the easiest European qualifying groups with Austria, Lithuania, Faroe Islands, Romania, and Serbia and they only finished second in the group. He has an unpredictable style and he will need to manage his star players well and try to find a defense that can work for them. France must play better in the World cup then they did in qualifying for it.

The big match for France may be their one against Mexico, as they have a solid squad and a great defense to thwart the French offense.

France can win the World Cup, but they will need to do it with their offense. If their defense plays well and tightens up in the central area they will be tough to beat and may make another run to the finals.
