World Cup Friendlies Roundup
A week before the World Cup begins teams are playing in friendlies to tune up and three of the teams that have the good odds to win in South Africa played yesterday and none of the teams looked that great even though two of the three won.
Mexico 2 Italy 1
Italy are the defending champions, but looked a bit sluggish in a 2-1 loss to a Mexico squad that has looked impressive as of late and may be a good dark horse pick to go far this summer.
Even though Mexico lost to England in their last match they actually looked pretty solid in the match. Against Italy they took a 2-0 lead, as Carlos Vela and substitute Alberto Medina scored on the very tough Italian defense. Italy scored a late goal, but it was Mexico that still con convincingly and they were the team that controlled the match.
Mexico may have gained a ton of confidence in the match, as they beat a Gianluigi Buffon led Italian side and they killed the Italians in time of possession (64% to 34%) even though both teams had the same amount of shots (15).
Italy’s odds have dropped a little, as Bovada has them at +1400 to win the World Cup and they have Mexico at +10000.
Spain 1 South Korea 0
Spain is the favorite to win the World Cup this summer and they have won 11 matches in a row, but needed a late goal to beat South Korea 1-0 last night. With only four minutes left in the match the score was still 0-0, but Jesus Navas hit a great 25-yard laser to give Spain the win.
Even though Spain barely won against an inferior squad they can be a little happy since they won and Cesc Fabregas, who has been getting over an injury, played and almost scored having a shot deflect off the crossbar. Fernando Torres is also getting over an injury and did not play in the match. However, they have to be a little concerned, as they are supposed to have one of the best offenses in the world and only scored one goal in this match against a team they should school.
Bovada has Spain at +400 to win the World Cup, which is the best odds of any team playing this summer.
Germany 3 Bosnia-Herzegovina 1
Germany still has good odds to win the World Cup, but they have lost a couple of defenders to injury and the big blow was losing MF Michael Ballack, who will not be playing this summer after an injury at the end of the English Premier League season.
The Germans fell behind early 1-0 to a solid Bosnia squad that will not be playing this summer barely missing out after losing to Portugal in a playoff.
With Michael Ballack out Phillip Lamm is now the captain of the German team and he scored to level the game at 1-1. He will have to be a leader this summer with Ballack injured and he led by example in tying the match last night. Germany scored two more goals on a couple of penalties.
Even though Germany’s odds at Bovada fell a tad after their slew of injuries they are still a good pick at +1400 and will be a threat in South Africa.
